I have a 96 4.0 ranger with 273.000 miles just on oil changes and no work done on it just regular tune-ups but the last month or so the idle is higher then normal
and when you give it gas idle shoots way up to around 3000. Then i noticed driving in the wind the o\d light started flashing till i stopped shut it down and restarted it was off. i have a friend with a snap-on code reader and these 2 codes came up PO 761 and a HO 2511 he cleared the codes and ten minutes later the check engine lite came back on. I know the po761 is a shift solenoid
#3 performance code is this something i can fix at home or get raked at a trans shop. I have a haynes manual and cant find anything about the other code can
anyone give me an idea what im up against.
Thanks Steve
Welcome to FTE snasby. Holy smoke. 273k and this is your first grief with the old girl. Good for you. Good maintenance obviously paid off. Obviously you've got an automatic. I'm not sure myself, but hang tight and someone who's done it will chime in soon enough. The solenoid code may indicate need for replacement which isn't that big a deal for you. As far as the HO 2511 code, I'm thinking that the technical info thread at the beginning of the forum might help. Check it out. I'll do the same. The Haynes is NFG!! and will tell you there's no owner serviceable items in the tranny. Saves paper I guess. lol But be carefull just the same. Some codes are thrown by the computer that may be just a symptom of another problem.
Thanks fred
I looked in the tech info pages first and did not see anything and yes it's an automatic. come to think of it about a month ago the shifter on the colom felt lose for a day or two before the o\d lite started to come on. the engine is a 4.0 efi if that makes and diffrence.I just wonder if the ho2511 is something to do with emisions it feels like the truck is losing power from the get up and go as if it's sucking air or something. I looked at all hoses and dont see vacuum leeking
also this truck has 2 converters under it. I thought that was strange i have never heard of 2 in a row on a single pipe. It's a good truck with no rust on the top ran great until this problem i am hoping to get another 100.000 out of her.
Well i guess he read the scanner wrong i'll take the truck to advance auto today and see if they will scan it for me. the truck runs good around town except that the rpm's jump around and the slow start up.just hope i can find the problem and fix it. thanks for the help.

I dont know about being pumped out but the filter was changed last fall
i took it to a dealer and for a small price of 168.00 they drained and changed
filter and fixed some threads for the pan said they were striped before they started working on it. I this an easy fix i can do at home? or take it to a shop?
thanks for your help
STEVE
Well for that price around here, the Dealer will drop the pan, clean it & the magnet, replace the filter & pan gasket & do a full tranny fluid pump out, usually with a solvent flush. I'd not have opted for the solvent flush though, imo with that many miles on your tranny, especially if it had never had a fluid change in all those miles, as it would likely have varnish & sludge deposits & murpheys law says they'll end up where they'll likely do the most mischief!!!!!
I'd maybe consider trying a safe detergent only, cleaner upper like Seafoam Trans Tune, at the stated package treat rate, for a few miles, before the tranny fluid flush & filter change. Maybe if the solenoid is just stuck from depoits, it could free it up.
Or maybe you'll find out it would be less costly in time & money to just replace the solenoid.
If your asking about how to change the questionable solenoid I don't know how difficult it is. Maybe ask on the Tranny forum, bet they would know.
