So i go to pick up a load of wood today. Im backing up behind my house and all of a sudden my foot almost goes to the floor. First thing i said was %$^^ i blew a line. Nope, so i get back in the truck back up another 2 feet and the truck jolts twice and then rolled fine. I get out to find my rear brake pad laying on the ground. These brakes have about 18K on them. The stupid right rear brake has done this twice now. The inner pad wears down to nothing, and the outer looks brand new. So im going to do everything perfect this time in the rear. All new calipers, rotors, pads, hardware kit etc.
1. Where is the cheapest place to get the powerslot cyro's and hawk pads?
2. I assume that the caliper slide pins are the cause of all of this, does anyone know if they have an updated pins for the rear like the front?
3. When replacing the fluid I should only use DOT 3 fluid correct? Something about dot 5 not absorbing water?
now you made me go outside and check my brakes,
thats scary,
you dont want it to happen to you on a 3000 miles trip for sure,
ill be following this one to see what i have to watch for,
Not to scare you anymore, but i had no clue of it, i was driving today it was about 20 minute away and notice my truck was consuming quite the amount of fuel, then BAM, this happens. This is now going to be something i look at with every oil change.
Happened to me last year. Went to change my rear brakes and right brake the inner pad was gone and the pistons were shot. When I noticed a little squeal every once in awhile last week that was the first thing I checked.
yeep, thats were my eves will go once in a while from now on, i do quite bit of dumb street racing, , thats my devil side coming out, and ill be in a dip DO DO if i loose my brakes going in to the turn and not beeing able to brake, with brakes, and to stop on the tree, and the guy i just blew away would have a good reason to get a hernia from laughin,
I am thinking your caliper slide pins are stuck. Something as simple as removing the caliper/bracket, and break them loose with PB blaster and vise grips, sand down the pin and the bore with 400 or 600 grit paper, and then lube them up with brake or hi-temp grease. I found out one of my left front slide pins was frozen and with my new pads i had installed it locked up the tire while in the air and pulled to the left.
Im with kris, had my drivers front pin stuck, does the same gig. I had to use a torch to get mine out, it had been stuck for a WWWWhile. The little rubber boot is the culprit, if its cracked or of its little seat on either side, narly stuff starts growin in there. U should be able to pull the pins in and out slightly by hand, if you cant there STUUUCK.
Just a little added information, be sure NOT to use never seize on the caliper pins. Too many times ive seen people use never sieze, mostly cause its redily available. It just cannot take the heat that is generated from the brakes. It dries up and becomes a solid, and locks the pins in place. And it doesnt take very long for this to happen either. BE sure to use a synthetic brake grease. And like they said above, clean everything well, then apply generous amounts of grease, for long trouble free service.
Mine is better. The guy that rebuild my rear end forgot to tighten or bolt up my drivers side caliper. I was hauling trailers then. Couldnt figure out why the brakes were making noise. Removed rear wheel and find the caliper chewed up the wheel and just hangin out. No bolts at all holding it on. Considering I left Reno and went over Donner and a couple of trips back and forth.....Its like O my God Im still alive. or in teen terms ILOMG.
That happened to my f-150 in the front caliper. I tighten it but not enough, and it one of the bolts fell out and was locking up my front brake. Since then i have always used blue locktite on them and i tighten them until i can no longer move a breaker bar. Loosening them back up requires a cheater bar hooked to the breaker bar. My theory on the caliper mounting bolts is, its never too tight.
Hey John311, There's a company called Stylin Concepts, they sell the Power Slot Rotors for our Trucks and they're in Independence Ohio. Not to far from yah. About $144.95 each Rotor. Front pads are $84.00 and RR $89.00. Hey I have a Testament to the Quality and durability of PS rotors and pads. I installed PS rotors and Hawks pads on my Excursion 3-1/2 years ago. I just had the brakes checked out today and I still have 60% left on the front and 30% on the rear. I did opt to do the brake job in the rear though.. I don't have PS rotors in the RR just the hawk pads w/stock rotors, but I still got 54,000 miles out of the rear with hawk pads and I still don't need pads in front Ft. HAH HAH I love it!!!!
