I have a queston regarding my 2003 f150 4.6l engine. Most of the time the transmission works fine, however sometimes when I have not come to a complete stop and I step on the gas it feels like it stays in second too long before it goes into first. When it goes into first it clunks and it has made a grinding sound a couple of times. Because of the grinding noise I took it in and had the tranny fluid changed. They said there was some clutch material in the pan but nothing else unusual. The truck has 85,000 km on it the tranny can't be going already can it?? If you come to a full stop everything works fine. Any thoughts as to what might cause this? Thanks
Could just be one of the shift solenoids. Is there any Check Engine lights on? If not, run it by one of your favorite dealership service advisors. Sometimes you can get lucky enough to find one that spent time under a hood too...
Got the same problem with the first to second shifting with my 4 speed V-10 motorhome even from a complete stop.
Have you found out anything yet?

Got mine fixed. You are not going to like it.
There was metal clutch material throughout due to having driven it 1,000 miles with the shfting problem. Total rebuild and the shift problem was still the same! My xmission guy put a battery powered diagnostic tool and drove the vehicle. After coming to a complete stop the vehicle computer said we were going 22mph hence the no downshift to first! He contacted Ford and found they knew about this problem and had a new cable harness installation as a fix. It involves also pulling 7 pins out of the connector on the computer (mounted to the steering column on my RV). Voila the problem is fixed! Thank you Ford for keeping that little gem a secret! Bottom line, don't drive it much if it is not shifting right and you may save a total rebuild.
