I bought a 96 F350 4x4 5 speed single cab, with a 460. The truck has a 4 in. lift 87g miles otherwise completly stock. The cleanest truck of that era I have seen. now I want to start getting more power out of it. Without getting into a complete rebuild yet , it runs smooth and quiet now, no leaks. engine compartment you can eat out of. what mods are the best to do, to start out with. I have about 2 grand to work with this year. all help and ideas greatly appreciated. thanks
fourday
first thing id do is headers and true dual exhaust for power... but itll make the exhaust louder. just for that youre looking at a grand or so. next would be the stock air box- id swap to a k&n filter and cold air intake- less restrictive. theres a couple hundred dollars or so right there. after those are done id wait until i had more money and then swap in a cam and lifters and possibly a chip. if its a california truck it may be mass air- so the chip wouldnt be necessary
thanks for the reply. I have pretty much decided on exhust, have looked at the Banks system, pretty pricy, but it doesnt seem to be true duel exhust. still coming from both manifolds into one pipe, then into the muffler, it is only after the muffler it goes into two pipes.I would like it to sound a bit louder though. the truck came from arizona, but is now in california. It has been smogged, but I have been told to get rid of the cat. Which where I live now, I wont have to smog it again. The truck allready has a k&n, unsure if it is stock air box or not. will check into it. Im not adverse to getting rid of as much smog stuff as I need. Im fairly certain most of the stuff on it is stock, as the original owner kept it in his garage all of the time, and in the last few years couldnt afford to drive it much. I hesitate to do much to the engine yet, as it runs so well and is still very tight, I will probably wait until I save some cash and the engine starts needing some work. I will be needing some new tires this summer, so with the exhaust and tires will prob. eat all of that cash up quickly. any ideas on exhaust? is the banks syste worth that much, or is there another combo as good? thanks again for the info. I will try to post some pictures soon thanks 4day.
there are universal 3" exhaust kits at summitracing.com for not much money... i think a couple hundred dollars. those will be all the pipe needed to do the exhaust from the headers back, get a couple mufflers, and get an x-pipe crossover (or h-pipe if space is limited- but x-pipe is better because of less restriction). you could go to broncograveyard.com and get some l&l lifetime warranty headers, and if you arent putting cats on then thats it... around a grand for parts, then installation. the high flow cats is where alot of the money for the big kits goes.
