I wanted to get new plugs today for my 1993 ranger 4.0L pushrod type engine, under my hood it states spark plug type: AWSF-42PP, gap-.052-.056. I just got off the phone with my Ford dealer and they said that the number has changed to: AWSP-486 and is the same plug. Can anyone verify this? (This is a Canadian Ford dealer). The SOHV 4.0L uses different plugs all together, how can you tell the two engines apart? I have never seen a SOHV 4.0L so I don't know? Also the spark plug gap seems big compaird to an old chevy I had, only around .028. The SOHV is even bigger around .060. Does all Fords have big plug gaps like that?
Yes the plug number has changed as Ford has updated them since then, running either one will be fine (whatever your parts place has). Stick with Motorcraft plugs if you can.
The "PP" suffix denotes double platinum. The "FM" denotes iridium (finewire), which I understand Ford is switching to universally. The SP-486 is a new one to me, but its on the list that Rockledge linked, so it should be okay.

Fred, I think the "SP" is a single platinum w/nickel electrode plug.
I also understand that the "FM" series are now the recommended replacement plugs for Fords equipped with DIS/EDIS ignition systems. The waste-spark characteristic of these systems are the reason why double platinums were recommended for so many years. Because of that, I'd go with the FM plugs.
