Black smoke out the exhaust, truck smells like gas, but doesnt have a gas leak, and I think the gas mileage has been increasingly worse over the past couple of months. Could this be the sign of an O2 sensor needing replacement ?
I don't really know where to start looking. I am going to do a tune up soon, plugs, wires, cap rotor, etc, and I may aswell change the 02 sensors while im at it. Where are they located?
Sounds like a real dirty air filter........the tune-up should include that too......and probly will help in the mpg department. I'd start there and see how it was after.
My 92, 5.0, auto has one O2 sensor......and it's located in the down pipe from the exhaust manifold......Mine is in the passenger side.
Depending on where you get your parts.....they should be able to tell you whether you have one or two and where located.
Has the check engine light been on at any time....ever? if so check for stored codes.. www.fordfuelinjection.com. It woud be worthwhile to also check the fuel pressure, if the regulator is faulty the engine will run rich and there may not be any codes.
