Pyrometer Question

I am installing my pyro. I am going with pre turbo. How many have put it in the "Y", right before the turbo, so you get both sides? I know some puts them in the lower pipe. I would like to measure both sides I believe.

Thanks

I think you would want to stay as close to the motor as possible, temps will drop futher down the up-pipes.

The Y pipe has a divider inside it, you would have to mod that first... Not worth it IMHO... I have a pyro probe in both sides and see about a 50 degree dif...

Good call, CSI, that was going to be my answer.

By the way, when I get my new exhaust housing (1.0 w/w.gate) I will be taking out the divider in the "y" and machining as much out of the housing as I can get to before I slam the turbo back on.

Dont remove it! Its there for a reason. But if you want to shape it some and blend it I cant see where that will hurt. But if it was me, I would get a new one from Ford. 90% you will break the bolts off trying to get it out, and then you need to replace the dougnuts while your there.

I didn't know there was a divider in it. It seems that the gases would be flowing too fast to see much of a temp drop before the turbo, don't know. I may just go ahead and put it in the up pipe. It probably would be easier than climbing around under the hood.

Thanks

Just drill and tap the manifold, that way if you ever remove it you can just cap it... I have a drill and clamp on in the up pipe and now with the new gauges I have to weld up the hole this weekend... Because the new ones were drill and tap.

Well, the reason I want to take out the divider is for flow reasons. I've had numerous turbos off of these things and looking at the "y" it seems to me that the passenger side of the "y" poses a HUGE flow redirection/restriction. Besides, the wastegate only dumps from the passenger side....allow the combined gasses from the left AND right bank to be wastegated and things become more efficient. The gasses (that have mass) would much rather go in a nice curved path than a straight shot into a wall and redirected. Besides, I'm going to get a new "y" and donuts first anyways. That way I can have all the stuff altered before I tear it all apart. Thanks for your concern anyways!!

CSI,

Mine used to have the drill and clamp style....just drill out the hole bigger and tap it!! The clamp ones are usually only a 1/4" hole...a 1/8 pipe tap requires 5/16"

Cleatus I would be very interested in hearing your findings on that test drive. I know that the flutes are there for a reason to make the turbo more efficient.
But if removing the barrier gets rid of a lot of exhaust flutter and gives a little more lag in return, that might be a fair tradeoff IMO. As long as it doesn't ruin the boost numbers altogether.

I think I would leave the divider in, I'm sure the R&D guys had done all that stuff and found it to be better with it in.

Agreed.
But I still would be interested in what the differences are.
The same volume of exhaust gas still has to go out through the turbo.
And I am sure that putting in a passage would increase turbo response time. (more lag.)
But if it lowers EGT's significantly without sacrificing power while pulling a large load up a big hill, then it's a worthwhile modification for me. I'll trade an extra second of turbo response for that.

Without the divider the gases are slaming into eachother, thats why its there.

Whew!!

Well, I got my hole drilled and tapped last night. Was not as bad as I was expecting. I put it in the end of the drivers side manifold underneath.

Thanks everyone!
