4x4 frame vs 4x2 frame.. difference?

4x4 frame vs 4x2 frame.. difference?
ok, i know there IS a difference between a 4x4 frame and a 4x2 frame, but im not sure what exactly it is... is it the way its shaped? possibly narrower/wider, higher/lower? or is it just the crossmember?
im thinking all that it could be is the crossmember, but i havent looked under a 4 wheel drive version... does anyone have pictures for comparison? or possible draw it up?

i thnk your right on the crossmember idea. given that you can get either engine/powertrain in 2 or 4x i'd vote that their the same except for a spot to put the transfer case, maybe a bit more in the front end...but i'm not a tech.
