302

I would like to in the near future build up the 302 out of my mustang and put it in my truck because I ain't real impressed with the speed density fuel injection and want to run a carburetor. It is a 1972 302 and was looking at the summit racing street/strip intakes. I don't know if I want the stage 1 or 2 but I'm thinking one of them. If you remeber me I am cheap. I would like a cam with a lopey idle with lifter kit for less than $200. I'm thinking of doing a port and polish on the stock heads cause I can't afford performance ones. New rocker arms and valves and springs, again on the cheaper side. Possible distributer upgrade, most likely ignition upgrade. What size carb do I need. I'm thinking of leaving the bottom end the way it is. Stock pistons, crank, con rods, and heads. But I'm also looking at summits Sealed power engine rebuild kits, debating between cast and hypereutectic pistons. I am looking for power on a bugdet for in my truck, I don't do a whole lot of towing but some. any suggestions would be appreciated.
I would like this project to cost less than $1000

I have a friend that I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a 351M off of him and was thinking of building that instead, same thoughts for the 351 though as far as intake and 4 barrel carb, ignition, and such. I don't know anything about 351's but I'm told that the 351M is more of a truck motor. I think its a late 70's ealry 80's. Anyone have power ratings on this motor?

First off ya need to know that the 351/400m series engine will not fit where a 302 is. A 351 Windsor, 300 6 a clever and others will fit. The 300 I6 is the best low torque engine for towing.

The 72 302 is a turd. It's got a retarded cam, Grand Canyon sized dishes in the pistons. You'd need to correct those two deficiencies for starters. Ditto for the 351M, it's also a turd, just a bigger, heavier one. Pistons are too tall, stroke is too short, cam is also retarded. It can be fixed, but it'll cost you. What year truck do you have now?

I have an 86 F250 with a fuel injected 302, I want a carb instead of FI. After talking to friends I decided to stick with the 302 so forget about the 351m for now.

You can go with a 351W instead, that would be a bolt in, and a definate improvement over the 302.

I already have the 302 and have a couple others sitting around for spare parts so I'll go with that. I'm going to build up the 302 anyways so I'll get the power I want.

If I run a big cam should I run the stock pistons because they have the valve reliefs in them. The kit from summit, the number above is wrong pt# FEM-MPH172-000, It says piston stlye is flat so I don't know if they have the valve reliefs or not.

You want flat tops with reliefs. Most like this are good with most cams, not till you get into monster cams or heads with larger than 1.94 intake valves will you need something with bigger reliefs.

I'm looking at the MSD 6A ignition box. What do you think? With the stock distributer.

another thought, can I use the flywheel off my 86 on the 72? I don't know what years used the 50oz and what years used the 28oz.

86 flywheel is 50 oz/in. the 72 is 28oz/in. The 50 was first used sometime in 1980-1982.
