Turned the key on and nothing! Turned to start and nothing! Pulled the switch out. Pulled the steering wheel and dug deeper until I found this (pic) It is broken and I dont know what it is called? Or if it is an available item any more? Can anyone help me out? 88 f150 lariet xlt 4x4 I did not realise it but I have tilt steering only there is no way to engage it (no arm) or even a hole in the housing for one? Odd. Were all equipped with tilt and if you ordered it you got a lever?
Ive already assumed this will be a day at the wrecking yard unless someone here pulls a rabbit. Thanks
Thank you. I did wonder why the turn signal lever could be pulled back? Never occured to me that I had tilt. Wheel has always been in the top position.
You don't pull the turn signal lever towards you to release the tilt. You push it towards the dash. This is how all Ford tilt wheels were from the invention of the thing in the 50s. The trucks were the last to convert to the seperate lever in 1992.
Next hurdle. Picked up the part at ford. It came out easy because it was broken in 2 pieces. But the new piece cannot be installed without further dis-assembly. It appears to me I need to remove the outer most part(the piece that tilts) Problem is how do I remove the bolts I have pictured? Allen wrenches do not work. It is threaded one on each side. Anyone done this before that can give me some direction. Thanks again. http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/347099.jpg
Got it! Did a search and found complete instructions posted by "jas88 " I also took anothers advise and cut the end off allowing me to replace without tearing the complete column apart. Went together in minutes! thank you "88mustangGT" The only difference is I can now shift into RNDetc without having to turn the key. The steering still locks with key off. For those attempting this shortcut the only tricky part is lining up the geared mechanism with the ignition. Put it all together and "pushed" on the signal lever and surprize I have tilt steering! I get "quicklooks" bus driver joke now. I guess it was not in the total upright position all along but when I put it there it was indeed like driving a bus. Again my thanks for all the replies
Quicklook They are pins. To remove you screw a bolt into them and pull out. I did not have to since I took a shortcut and cut the end off the actuator which allows enough room to install with out removing more column pieces. Thanks

Yes, you are correct, I forgot. Ford first offered a tilt wheel in the mid 1960's. Lincoln was the first Ford product to offer one. Cadillac was the first car to have one, around 1961/62. In the 19 teens, there was a tilt wheel of sorts. It could be raised up out of the way, then tilted. It was called a "fat man wheel."
