Reviews on Remote Start

Hi Everyone,
This is my first topic I have intitiated since joining and I would like to pick some of your brains (if you don't mind).

I have an '05 F350 with the 6.0 Diesel and I am wanting to put in a remote start system. I know Ford sells one that ranges between $200 - $300 (depending on the dealership you order it from) which includes many basic security system functions. I like that it is Ford, but brand (and money) isn't as much of a concern as the problems that might be associated with them.

I have read in other forums that they can be run on a timer (typically 10, 20, or 30 seconds) before they actually start or they can be wired to the wait to start light which engages the starter after the light goes out. I have also heard that it could potentially interfere with some of the electronics if it is wired into the WTS light?

Has anyone ran into any problems with the wait to start light or ran into ANY problems from putting a remote start on a diesel? I primarily would use it in cold weather, but it is not worth risking the running quality of my truck for a remote start system. I appreciate your opinions. THanks

Hey Dude, welcome to the FTE. It's been a great place for me to learn.

To answer your question...yes seveal guys have them installed. There was a thread posted several weeks ago on the subject.

If you just be patient, some of them should be along shortly but if they don't, just keep scrolling through the pages.

Hey Js,

Do a quick forum search on Viper Remote Start

As mstg says, there's a lot of good info here on remote start, and it seems that the vast majority go with some flavor of Viper.

best regards,
TX

I've haven't heard much about dealer installed auto starts but I have heard people rave about the Viper ones. I'm planning on getting one myself soon.

Just do a search BEFORE you post. There are several topics already on this subject. I remember one from just a few weeks ago that was several pages of different kinds and the pros-cons of each model. A lot of people told us what they were using and why they liked it. Search for that, even in the 6.0 forum and you fill find a ton.

I don't want to come off as rude, I just get tired of telling my same experiences over and over again because people dont do research before just asking a question. Sorry...

I have an Ultra Start on my '05 and had one on my '02. One nice thing about it is it has a turbo timer built in - Hit the button before turning the key off and it will idle for 2 minutes and then shut off. My truck seems to start better with the Ultra than when I use the key directly? It does not have the longest range out there though.

They do make one model that will show you on the remote whether the truck has started, doors locked/unlocked. I think this would be handy for when you are starting your tuck but are not in view of it.

I put a Code Alarm from Mothers located in San Antonio Texas. It has worked perfect for 2 years now. It has the start delay for diesel's. Go to any credible alarm place and you should have many options to choose from.

I installed a Crimestoppers bought off Ebay. $90, install it yourself and your ready to go. Alarm, remote start, cool down timer all in one. I have been very pleased with mine. If I had it to do over I'd buy one with the LED remote monitoring.

The factory ones are made by Codealarm. I like the factory stuff and was considering one, but went with a Viper 560. Turbo timer can be set at 1,2,3, 5 or 10 mins. Remote start works flawlessly, seems to be a good piece for not a bunch of change.

I put on the Viper 791xl and it's the best thing I did to my truck. Has remote start, Turbo timer, Alarm, & some type of warming feature that I don't use because I never seem to leave Texas anymore. It has the 2way remote and they say a1 mile range. I know I can start my truck 1/2 mile away. It does use up AAA batery ever month though.

I apologize to anyone that thinks i am trying to re-hash a previous topic. I also appreciate all of the advise on the different types and things you would have done differently when you made your purchase. I find that type of advice extremely beneficial.

However, i did read the previous forums. I did find them informative and educational, but the thing i am concened with is any problems remote start system may cause to the computer or to other systems on the truck. I haven't seen any threads in FTE that mention any problems, but other articles and forums i have read on this (outside FTE) have people indicating that their remote start systems are creating problems in their truck(I think this is the minority, so i would like to determine this).

As far as i can tell, that is mainly when it is wired to the WTS light. Something about interfering with the ingnition system (i am pretty new to diesels, so i am not sure). That is the only concern i have with putting a remote start system in. That is also why i am trying to get this type of information from people that might be more knowledgable on the topic. Again, i appreciate the advice, as i do find it very educational. I would appreciate any comments on potential problems. Thanks again for all of the replies.

There aren't any comments regarding issues with the computer because there aren't any issues. The reputable company's remote starts work great. You can't wire to the WTS light in your 05 unless something has changed. They have to set-up a timer which is either integrated into the Remote Start or is external. The Code Alarm I believe has one internal, but the Viper needed an add-on. Not a big deal.

I don't see your post as any problem. And as far as the remote start on my 6.0L, I personaly have not had any problems and have never heard anyone else with problems. But I would like to learn more of the WTS light problem. This is why we all are here, to learn from everyone.
