Hello everyone I have a 1994 f-350 diesel I am only getting about 130 miles per from my frount tank an about 125 from my rear tank, when I fill them up I can only put in 12 to 13 gal of fuel in the fount an the same in the rear. I am only
about 240 miles on 2 tanks I think it should be better than that , can some one let me know . Thank you Rick
first of all it sounds like your fuel gauge is not very accurate. you should be able to put atleast 15-17 gallons in when they are on E they are both right around a 19 gallon tank.
For fuel mileage you need to change the fuel filter, air filter, and clean the fuel return screen on the fuel filter housing. when you remove the fuel filter from the housing there is a hole on the drivers side. in there is a fine screen that get plugged with junk. use a q-tip or flat blade screw driver to gently clean that screen. Also regulate your right foot is one of the biggest help for fuel mileage. Tire size and pressure help a bunch too. if you are have your tires fully inflated it will help. Load range E's to 80 psi, load range d to 65.
I check with the ford dealer here an they told me I have 19 gal. tank in frount an a 18.5 in the rear. My truck is all stock no mods on it an I drivr it like a grandpa. I will check the fuel filter an the screen , my tires are stock size I will check thee load range. I will thank you for the info . Rick
I had a very similar problem with my tanks not taking but 7 or 8 gallons of fuel. I just thought the gauge was bad so 120 miles later I was settin on the side of the road. The problem is the filler neck. Try pulling the nosel out a couple inches instead of putting it all the way in and dont pull the handle all the way. I only had that problem at a couple of gas stations. They are running to high of fuel pressure out of the gun and it kicks the safety on the nosel so you think it is full.
You might have a foaming problem when refilling the tanks. When I fill my tanks (18.2 gallons rear; 19 gallons front) I place the nozzle just far enough so it stays in without me having to hold it. I turn on the nozzle and lock the trigger in the first (lowest fuel flow) notch and start cleaning the windows.
When it shuts off, I move the nozzle to the other tank and do the same thing.
I do the samething I have to have the fuel pump on the slowest setting or I can't fill it
I think it is because of the way they filler tube are there is no drop to them they are flat across to the tanks an they have no filler vent. I dont think it is foaming but I could be wrong. Rick

when i fill up, i hold the nozzle sideways, so the hose is pointing towards the rear of the truck and dont put the nozzle in all the way. This helps to minimize the foaming of the fuel up the filler neck. Ill fill one tank, go to the other, then come back to he first just to make sure any of the foam has settled and usually get another gallon or so in. there is a mod out for the filler neck that converts it to a larger diameter. someone will post it, im sure.

4dr, they way I operate is I ensure the fuel tank is full, I keep a close eye on the fuel mileage, and then do the math, I drive 240-280 per tank when on trips and have never had a problem, but that works out to be 16-17 gallons with my fuel mileage. You need to figure your fuel mileage exactly by doing the math on one fill up, looking at your original post if you are really getting 10 mpg which is real bad if you drive careful, shoot it is real bad for a PSD if you are towing then I wouldn't drive more that 160 per tank, but if your tanks are full you should be good to 160 at 10 mpg. Keep close track and if you have questions about how to check fuel mileage throw them out. Also look in your valley below your fuel filter and see if there is fuel in there, I am going to say at 10 mpg you have issues you need to fix
I agree with bkcowboss. After I bought my '97, ran the "little" tank empty on several occasions. I kept waiting the "low fuel" light, like on the gassers, to come on, but it never did.
I thought the light was burned out. Found out later that there isn't one for the diesels. I'm not sure if not having a low-fuel light makes sense or not. Seems like if the tank is almost empty, diesel or gas, it's almost empty. Anyway, I'm getting off-topic, I apologize.
Running the tank empty on occasion PROBABLY won't harm anything. You'll get a helluva shake when that 7.3 starts receiving the go-juice again. Running the tank empty helped me determine what size tank I had, front and rear, AND it gave me the confidence to get a good feel for how far I could go before switching to the other tank. I consistently get 255 - 275 on the "little" tank. I get 265 -285 miles on the "big" tank.
When I fill up, the "little" tank takes about 16.5 - 17.4 gallons; the "big" tank takes 17.7 - 18.6 gallons, give or take on both tanks, depending on how much gravity is pulling on my foot. That leaves me just under a full gallon of leeway in case I'm not paying attention.
You might want to do the filler neck mod. I have done it on my truck and a couple of others and I love it. I can use the big truck nozzles and run them wide open until about 1-2 gallons from full, then they click off and I slow pump the last gallon or two.

About 2/3 down, look for "High Speed Filler Neck for $40". It took me about 2-3 hours per tank to do the mod, after I had all of my parts.
One thing that I did do different was I used a "T" and reinstalled the rollover/vent valve in the breather hose at the frame.
Im not sure about running your tank empty wont hurt anything. I ran mine empty 3 weeks ago. 2 weeks ago I started leaking a little bit a fuel but not much. Last week it started leaking by the gallon. I thought it might have been a hose cracked. But it turned out it was the fuel pump. Might just be a coincidence though.
Running the fuel tank much past 1/4 tank increases the chance of air getting into the lines from the fuel sloshing around. When Im in town I switch it over around 1/4 but on the highway I wouldnt be afraid to run it to the red mark. Air isnt good for your injectors or your fuel pump.
Hello everyone : I jsut got back from a trip with my truck an I had a camper on it an I was getting 12 mpg, my front tank I got 210 mile off it an my fuel geage showed empty at about 160 mile , when I swithed it to the rear tank my neddle was on the left side of the red make an when I filled it up I put in about 16.5 GAL comming home with the camper an the A/C on I had 215 miles on my front tank befor I swithed to the rear an I was in empty at 168 miles , I put in just over 17 GAL . I really do not want to run my tanks dry incause I suck up air. I am going to try an go 220 mile with this neck fill up . My front tank is 19 GAL an my rear in 18.5 GAL, I am going to go up 5 mile at a time to see what my real miles are cause my sending units are 180 dallares from the dealer here , on yea an I was only doing 60 miles hour with my cruse on with some hills to go up an down .
