adding a trans cooler

quick question about adding or swaping a trans cooler. i've got an 04, 4.6, w/ tow package(extra fact. trans cooler). I pull a 2 horse trailer and during the summer I see trans temps in the 200 deg. range when in traffic and slow driving. I bought a used electric fan cooler rated at 26000GVW. My question is, should I remove the factory cooler and install the electric or leave the factory and add the elec. along side of the factory cooler? The elect. cooler will fit to the left of the factory cooler and on the 04 there is a trans fluid temp by-pass that allows the fluid to come up to temp before it flows to the cooler/coolers.

how high of a temp do you see is it at or above 200? you should run between 179 and 195 for longest tranny life. i would flush the used cooler and then install it inplace of the stock unit

You might want to check with the manufacturer of the after market cooler. Some of these have a "thermostat" built in to protect from overcooling also. If this is the case ... as I understand it ... when the temperature is cooler the fluid would bypass the fins on the after market secondary and go back to tranny without additional cooling.

I think you are doing just fine with setup you have. The temps you are seeing are well within reason (particularly if they are max temps) and in addition they are occuring under low load conditions. A nominal temp of 180F is used when designing transmissions for the auto/light truck market. Occasional excursions beyond this will do no harm. If a mineral based oil is used, beware (meaning; change it) if you are approaching 250F. 300F for synthetic.

Rule of thumb: For every 10C (18F) increase in nomimal operating temperature, the life of the bearings/gears decreases by 50%. Nominal in this case means most of the time.
