so far our dealership hasn't seen any issues with the 6.4. When the 6.0 was introduced, there was a severe shortage of trained personnel to properly work on them. We struggled with the ojt part of it for a while. Unfortunately, during this period, thats when the "dissatisfied customer" started to come out. We learned how to adequately service this engine around the 05 model year, but the damage was done. The 6.4 debut brought adequate training with it. We were in the classrooms in plenty of time to learn about this motor. So far it has been more than adequate. There is however going to be the nay sayers simply because of the bad taste still in their mouth. My advice is buy with confidence, the 6.4 is not a 6.0.
Here is my two cents. I have owned '01 7.3 and an '03 6.0 and just ordered an '08 6.4. The 6.0 currently has 75,000 miles on it and has been back to the dealership only once and that was last week to get the EGR valve replaced. This engine runs circles around the 7.3 with more power and more mileage and is much quieter. I believe that Ford/International has done the homework on the 6.0 and learned what to improve to create the 6.4 along with the extra pollution devices without destroying power. From what we all read they tested these new engines thoroughly before going into production not wanting to relive the early 6.0 release.
I also want to say, I drive a lot in my business and for recreation and I usually buy a new truck every two years. I always do an evaluation of other manufacturers trucks to see whats' better. Seems for the last 30 years I always come home with a Ford. Many of my business partners and some of my family members, including my wife, drive brand "X" of which I can tell you more horror stories than the 6.0 has ever had. From what I have seen from the other guys new engines, I am more comfortable being on the bleeding edge ordering the new 6.4.
Anyone know how the 08 6.4 diesels are performing yet? I'm really interested in getting a new one but 6.0 was a disaster. My 03 7.3 has 275,000 miles and still going strong. So I am tentive to buy a new one.
The question to the original post was how are the new 6.4 performing. Not to bring up more negative comments on the 6.0. Here is my answer. Almost traded 1 1/2 years ago for a new 6.0. Decided to wait for the new 6.4. Did my research and comparing the big 3 to see which one would be best for me. I feel Ford did the testing to make the new 08 the best ever. Decided it was the truck for me. Could not be happier with my decision. There are been a lot of happy owners. Yes who wouldn’t want better fuel mileage? There are a lot of factors especially with the new 450’s like mine. They are heavier 8700# verses a 6,000# 250 standard cab with 3.73’s. I’m at 12.9mpg for rural and city driving right now. On the hills you can feel the extra weight you have. So what do I expect? Answer is the new 6.4 for me is fantastic. Ride quality, quietness, luxury and enjoyment.
To each their own... I would not purchase the 6.0 in 05 so went with the V-10 as a interim tow vehicle. It has served me well. I plan to purchase the 6.4 on the X plan as soon as we see some good incentives. It is my opinion that Ford has learned from the 6.0 experience and I have no problem with the 1st year 6.4.
IT is funny to me also when you bring up reliablity here everyone says that is what the warranty is for. IT makes me wonder how many people are real posters and how many are paid by ford to post postive things about a engine everyone knows was a poor design.
As you can tell by my other vehicles in my signature, I am a GM person by heart. Have owned two chevy trucks, 3 Datsun Z cars. Toyota p/u, 4 runner that was a lemon,a Transam, Fiero and my wife has a Corvette. a Tahoe, Avalanche that we traded for an Armada. Liked it better than the new 07 Tahoe, Expedition, Explorer. Love my Firebird Firehawk. some of friends have Stangs so we rib each other in good fun. Friends of mine own Dodge Rams and Chevy Silverados, we have respect for each others decisions that work best for us. To me the new 6.4 is the Best truck anyone has come out with yet!
