Michele was back last October to December (2006) for $2200.00 USD.
Someone made purchases for numerous things on a credit card that I had reported lost January 2006.
All these purchases were made without a 3 digit security PIN number supplied to the vendor.
The feeling is Michele lost her Mastercard statement from her purse and they used her number.
I had everything recovered by March 1st.
I also found out that the fact that she is a 4 time stroke victim absolves her from any legal contract..... if she happens to do things on her own.
How did they even approve charges to a card reported stolen a year earlier?
I had no idea Michelle suffered 4 strokes. My father in law had his first one a year ago today, still not back to 100%, but he's about 95% back to normal. Long road. I wish you and Michelle (and your dogs) the best.
I'm a little suspect of something myself, as when we moved, and had our address changed, somehow, after living here 3 months and paying 3 months of bills, our cell phone and long distance provider bills stopped coming. I called them to make sure they had the correct address, and sure enough, it got changed. So I changed them back a second time.
Then, last week, I got a notice from the post office to pick up a package addressed to someone not living here. And there is no chance it was a previous owner, because we are the original owners. So I went up to the post office and told them to look into it.
Someone intercepting my mail is a serious matter. That is why I don't like credit card offers. But all that stuff is unsolicited mail addressed to me. Goes into the shredder as soon as I get it.
Years ago, my wife had her tax refund stolen and cashed in at a moneymart somewhere up north. Had to get affadavits for Revenue Canada and Canada Post to get her refund back, and heard nothing about the perpetrator.
Last year, my mom had forgotten to pick up her credit card from a merchant, and walked home. From the time she left, to the time she got home and realized her mistake, and called the credit card company, someone had RACKED her credit card, in a matter of 20 minutes. All she had to pay was the 35 bucks that she charged. Again, nothing was heard about the perpetrator.

I joined LifeLock to help fight identity theft. In order for credit to be given to me, they have to call me and make sure it is me. It is another byproduct of the computer age. Never had this kind of thing in the old days before computers.
i got hit for about a thousand dollars on a credit card. Ive since opened a free checking account which i keep $1 in and add to it when i want to make an internet purchase. I have eliminated all my other credit cards and make sure i keep things secure as possible I NEVER GIVE MY SOCIAL SECURITY number to ANYONE who does not give me a W2 form or a drivers license and by law you dont have to give that info out. this includes doctors lawyers or anyone else who asks me for it unless they give me a w2 or a 1099
I got hit last year; 33 of us at work had all our personal info stolen from human resources, mine was for about 6K and I froze all my credit reporting from Equifax, Experian and Trans-whatever...not a block but an actual freeze...so I can't even get credit without direct contact and a special code...so far it seems to be working since somone in Jan tried to buy a house, a new toyota and appliences using my ID. I just recently attended a meeting on the subject and OVER 33% of Americans last year had their ID stolen and used illeagally...YES that many. Unfortunatley once it gets stolen its usually put up for sale on the internet within hours. Oh, and NO my employer is not responsible.
They say to not sign the back of the card. Only write Phot ID required..
This way they will ask for your license.
Not sure if this works.. I doubt it, because I have used credit cards for others and the mechant never even checked. I have bought stuff for Female relatives and they still do not notice or ask.
Identity theft will not stop until the mercants do more to verify the buyer.. They are to busy collecting the money to be bothered.. They just figure they got their money and the card company took the hit..
My personal method of identity theft avoidance is to keep all cards maxed out. So there is nothing to steal.
Plus with the right equipment they can have a DL ID with the holo-grams and magnectic stip made in less than ten minutes...they used one to open a Lowe's construction credit line with my personal info and their photo ID...they had it on video.
