well, now that ive finally got my stage I's up and running after months of deliberation and finally buying them, im lookin to upgrade my turbo. when i lug it and hammer down on her, it does a pretty good job of making the cars behind me pull over or hit the other lane. id like to clear up some of that smoke a bit. i'm also hitting 40psi way to easily and im worried about blowing the stocker up. what are my options?
The only performance bolt on turbo for our trucks is beans dominator 66. Your only other option would be to swap out all the uppipes and turbo pedistle stuff to the newer superduty style.
I think your mis-reading your gauge. I have yet to see someone hit 40psi with a stock turbinator. 33lbs is max i have evr hit which is high fior a stockie.
I have a D66 turbinator from Beans and let me tell you brother its a great turbo! They really compliment the injectors. However, it wont hit more then 30psi unless you have some work done to it. Good luck brother!
I hit 33 with my stock turbo and less fuel than stage 1's I think 40 psi is totally possible with stage 1's and a stock turbo. It won't last very long but it will do it. I personally keep kicking the idea of a H2E! they are expensive if you buy the kits but they are easy to get your hands on then build a mounting kit and up-pipes. From what I hear they are the same turbo that is used on an L-10 Cummins. those are everywhere.
The D66 from beans also seems to be a very good turbo. and to my surprise while still using the stock center housing the thrust bushing they seem to be so far holding up to higher boost than the stock turbo. Probably becuase of the better drive pressure ratio.
With my stocker, stage 1s, a huge leak in the uppipes and no programming for the injectors I am able to get to 32-33 psi. I have new uppipes on the way cuz my exhaust brake isnt holding at all anymore. I think with everything running like it should, 40psi is totally reachable.
I would agree that 40psi is possible. I can hit 33 with my stock turbo, smaller exhaust housing with out any injector work. At 40 psi I wouldnt think it would last too long
ya, im definately reading the guage right. preschool was tough, but i got it down pat now! now cowboy, im assuming the d66 has less boost because its got a larger compressor housing and is flowing more air?? the only thing that worries me about it is the stock centersection. ive always been under the impression that BB was much more desireable than thrust bearing. wont be purchasing until atleast mid summer, so ive got some more time to mull it over. thanks for all the input thusfar, guys.
Another thing you can do but will cost more is get the H2E kit from Hypermax but they are pretty proud of it at 2200. Or there are a few twin turbo kits out there.
FFemt- lol, wasn't tryin to dawg ya. I had stage 1's, hot chip and stock turbinator and never could get more then 33psi. Believe you me I tried my hardest But if you can do it then power to ya and do share with me how you made it happen!
I agree with you 100% that BB turbinators are better then the stock thrust bearing center section but my mechanic and I didnt seemed to be real thrilled about new uppies install. I heard it was a biotch! So the D66 was the way to go for me. Plus it flows more air then the H2E does so it was kinda a no brainer for me, less work-more air flow-half the price.... you get the picture, lol
P.S.- I read in the latest Diesel Power mag that VanAacken makes a kit that uses a 6.0 turbinator for our trucks..... Wonder how that thing does on our trucks?
its has sticky vanes just like it does in the 6blow! No I don't know they made some good power with them. just make sure its driven everyday and the vanes will stay nice and loose.
Rvd. Doc. - its taken with a grain of salt, i know everyone here's trying to help.
Didnt get to pick up diesel power this month, so im no in the loop w/ the vg turbo upgrade, seems a little complicated for me. Not extremely mechanically inclined, so the easier way is usually the way i go. anyone else have the d66? i'm sure i could figure out the swapping out part, but the h2e scares me a bit with the changing up pipes seeing how cramped the back of that engine compartment is. steve-o, how long did it take ya to do the install? anyone have a write up?
It took my mechanic a day to pull and install. Your gonna have to bend you some wrenchs and what not to get the stocker free of the uppies and the new one on to the uppies. Im in the process of making a write up on the install of the D66. I have a few pictures, but im just waiting for Tim to show me how to upload them to the gallery. To be honest, I think Im the only one on the forum with the D66 turbinator, and I say that becuase I asked and asked on this forum before I bought one if they had one or knew of anyone with one and nobody seemed to know. I ventured into the land of the unknown and Im glad I did!
There are a bunch of guys at TDS that have the D66 but I do think steve is the only one so far here who has it. as far as time to swap it will take you most of a day more than likely cause while your there you need to check you up-pipe gaskets closely. if they are leaking might as well do them while your there. If only our turbo were as easy as the SD's! they are a cake walk! turbo comes off the pedistal then the pedestal comes off. the exhaust collector is help by a clamp just like the downpipe. SWEET! but no can't be like that!
ok enough ranting. Steve the best way to uplaod photo's is once you have then on your computer open a webshots account. go to the upload screen, find your pics on your computer and upload them onto webshots then link them where every want to go.
