I have just bought a 2004 F-250 SuperDuty 6.0 Diesel with 98k miles from a Ford dealer (no warantee)
Just after I drove it home I noticed the Tow/Haul mode switch was not working - no dashboard light and no transmission downshifting.
The dealer took the truck back in and kept it for 2 days, it came back working, they claimed to have replaced the gear shift lever. 500 miles later and the Tow Haul has failed again.
Does anyone have a fix they can share with me for this problem or a wiring diagram for an 04 so I can fix it myself.
Chk fuse 24 and 34 .
then you need to chk that your brake lights are working .the brake pedal switch is in the circuit. Also the vss sensor and oss are part of that circuit also .
but you have no light on the dash so I would think that a fuse is blown or a broken wire in the steering column.
Got a fax # i'll fax the schematic to you.

The light for the Tow/Haul mode is on the gearshift selector (hmmmm I wonder where it is on a manual tranny?) and if you're not towing anything there wouldn't be any indication of turning it off. If you were cruising, you might notice it cut out of OD but that's about it.

Manual tranny doesnt have Tow/Haul.
The light is on the gearshift selector, as stated. Pushing the button on and off will not always make a noticable change (like a gear downshift) unless you are at a speed that would require it due to shift strategy. The little on light on the shift stalk should light up if it is working and you should notice increased shift points and some mild engine braking if not towing. If towing they will be more aggressive. Honestly, if you find that it is in fact not working, I would take it back to them again. Like FortyFords said, there are several things that could be causing the problem and even if the fuses are blown, they are blowing for a reason. Good luck.
Did you ever fine out what was wrong with your Tow/haul??? My truck is doing the same thing. I put it in tow haul and drive for a while and it blows the fuse and I loose all the gages and head light too. HELP
Yes the wires rub on something and end up shorting out. You can try pulling the lever apart and soldering in your own wires, or just replace the whole shift lever and tow/haul selector.
I just went throught this on my '99 It ended up being that the wires going into the shifter broke. you can eather buy a new shifter or do what I did and go buy some 24 guage wire from radio shack and pull new wires.

I beleive that the Tow/Haul light was always in the dash. It was implemented with the 6.0L and TorqShift transmission in 03. In 05 when the gas engine trucks got the TorqShift the Tow/Haul light was put in the dash for them also.
From 99-03 in the 7.3L trucks with the old 4R100 transmission and from 99-04 in the gas trucks with the 4R100 it was a switch to turn Overdrive off, and the light was on the shift lever itself.
