i bought a 76 f350 parts truck today. got it for 250.00 down from the 475.00 the guy wanted. but i want to know what engine is in it. it has had body repair aka a new door, so no tags. the valve cover has 5 bolts. thanks
Engine Identification (rev):
======================
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 12.7" wide the 351C is narrow.
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.
-There are other indicators but these are enough to distinguish engine families.
Looking at the block at the base of the distributor the 351C will be even with the bottom of the intake manifold. With a 351M/400 there will be a ~1" high lip up to the bottom of the intake manifold.
could be a FE as well... they have 5 valve cover bolts... three on top, two on the bottom.. The Intake is partly under the valve Cover, to determind what FE it is...you'll need block #'s thou
the motor smokes ALOT. it will be used for parts, thats what i bought it for. if it would have run good, i'd of fixed it up for a second work truck.
It's the rings and prob'ly not the bores! :)
It's an FE block, and is hard as a rock.
Now you need to measure the stoke (through the spark plug holes) to find out if it's got a 390 crank or a 352/360 crank. :)
There's also a clue to which is which, a notch-shape on the flywheel flange.
i got the vin off a registration i found in the glovebox. it is a 360. i took a part off it today. i started it then it stalled and won't restart. it cranks but thats it. i wanted to bring it in the garage, since its cool in there. but no go.
