For the first time ever I'm contemplating a Mac as my next system.... but that's at least another year away. At the rate Apple is going OSX will be available for all PCs in the future, not just Apple's Intel based systems. If that happens it'll be a no-brainer for me to switch. I'm leaning so much towards a Linux based laptop so a Unix based system is a lateral move for me.
I need a good laptop that can more or less get me through 4 years of college.
My current laptop is a Toshiba, bought in August of '05 and it was a pretty good computer, even in this day of age.
What are all your opinions on Mac Vs Windows and what do you recommend for a college-bound student?

The 1st thing I would do is a clean install of Windows XP. This should fix the conflict that you are getting blue screens from.
Your 2 year old laptop should be just fine for 4 years of college if you stick to email & word processing. You might run into problems with downloading all those movies & music that are shared on campus.
The only Apple that you should buy is an Ipod. Spend you excess $$ on school & some food (they sorta forget to eat anything beside fast food & pizza ).
Good luck in school, meet lots of people, & have lots of fun.
