I have been having problems with a whine that sounded like it was coming from the alternator, but it seems to run fine. (except for the rpm's moving up and down for some reason) But today I drove it a little after a sea foam treatment and popped the hood I touched the alternator and man it was HOT burnt my darn hand. Do they get really hot or have I found my problem.
They do get hot, but I think that's a little excessive.
Before you jump on the alternator, get your battery tested real well.
When the battery is going bad, or is discharged, it makes the Alternator output at 100% of rated Amperage. These alternators are not designed to put out more than 70% consistently without burning themselves up... so if you have a weak/bad battery then you still might be able to save your alternator.
