I have a 04 F-350 with 54,000 miles. The tranny started having some delayed shifts from park to drive or reverse. This only happens once and a while. I had the reverse planetary service done at 24,000 miles. It's at the the dealer now. It is not throwing any codes. They had to drive it off an on to get it to do it. They pulled the tranny pan and the oil is clean and no metal particles. They wanted to pull the tranny apart to diagnose for $1750. From the acticles I've seen on here and other places, always point to the Line pressure solenoid. Should I have this replaced? Or is there another solenoid that operates the low and reverse? I can't see paying the $1750 then add on what ever they might or might not find on top of that. A reman trans is $2000 with warranty and I can install that.
I think there are two solenoids that are normally included with the suncoast kit, but I don't know which ones exactly off the top of my head. I'd try those first, have it flushed, change the external filter at least, and see what happens. At worst you're out for a couple of solenoids---better than $1750 IMHO.
2k for a tranny is cheap. you could have several issues inside but if you can get a tranny for 2k, then if it is a good one go for it. line pressure should have been one of the first things they checked. if it is good, i would probably go with clutches or a seal.
The dealer could not find any TSBs or Broadcast messages refering to my problem. I ended up sending a e-mail over with some links to some ford Broadcast Messages refering to my problem that I found here and on the net. It seems as though ford erases some older messages from their system because the numbers didn't match anything in their system. Anyway they put a guage on it and got it to do what it was doing and found the line pressure was way low when it acts up or doesn't shift into gear. So they are gong to put a new line pressure solenoid in and hopefully that will cure my problem.
As far as a new tranny goes. I found it even at Autozone for Under $2k plus tax with a warranty or at ford It was $2200 plus tax with a warranty. That does not include the install or fluids. If my tranny ever goes bad I'll just put a new reman one in. Wouldn't be the 1st tranny I've installed.
Just an update.
The dealer put a new line pressure solenoid in. The tranny was shifting into reverse and drive like it should. But the shift between 1st and 2nd is now harsh. After putting some miles on it. The tranny is acting up again. But when it does act up it seems to take longer to hit 1st or reverse. So is there another solenoid that works the low and reverse? Just wondering if this the problem now? How many solenoids are in the tranny?
I think there are 8 solenoids in the 5R110???? I don't remember for sure, but I know it's more than the 2 I got with my suncoast kit. When I get home tomorrow I'll post the numbers of the solenoids since they were Ford solenoids I got and maybe one of the tech's can post what they are for. Seems really weird that after they installed the solenoid it worked correctly for a while and then reverted back. Did the dealer do a flush and filter change while they had it or did they just drop the pan and refill??
The dealer dropped the pan and checked the filters. They said the filter, pan and fluid was clean. I asked if a flush was needed and they said it was clean and didn't need it. I think it's weird also that the problem went away and came back but slighly differant. I still think it's a solenoid problem since once the gear is engaged stays engaged. It's mainly happens when you shut the truck off then restart it. So if there is any techs out there that have any ideas i'm all ears.
The tranny is shot now. Pulled a lite load (5500 lbs) about 45 min away and on the way back the tranny completly took a dump. It's at the dealer now. The torque converter balooned turned blue and is stuck in the trans. Pretty much sucks that a trans goes bad with just under 56K on it. Now just waiting to see if ford will help at all. If not, I guess a reman ford trans with a 3 year 75,000 mile warranty is next. Are the torque converters bad in these tranmisions? Or do I just have bad one?
I think you just got a bad one. I've beat the crap outta mine--first the stock tranny and now the suncoast and no problems yet (knock on wood). Did 8 hard 1/4 mile runs at bowling green this weekend with no issues on the factory convertor.
Not to throw methanol in your wounds, what type of services did you perform on the tranny that grenaded? The reason I ask is we have seen very few out and out failures in this forum.
It had the snap ring recall done at 25K which also included a fluid change. I changed the external filter before 40K. Dealer had the pan off to replace a solenoid at 54k which also had a fluid change. They told me the pan and oil was clean it didn't need a flush. 2K later the tranny goes . It deffinatley had plenty of new fluid during it's short life.
