Getting ready to buy a 1994 F250 4x4 extended cab long bed with the 7.3
Powerstroke. What should I look for before buying the truck (possible problems, things that could go wrong, Posative things). Any ideas whould be much help. Want to make sure I am getting a good truck.
you will also want to check the front suspension for bad ball joints and steering linkage as they are a problem area. Check the condition of the tranny fluid and drive the truck enough to be good and warm to know if the tranny starts to slip or do weird things when it warmed right up. Also important to pull the intake tubing off and check the condition of the turbo intake wheel. if it doesn't have straight sharp edges with square outer corners it has seen dirt/dust enter the engine from poor air filtertration. it bad for the turbo but its worst for pistons and cylinders. The intake wheel should not look like th efan blade from a household fan. it should have straight sharp edge not round curvey things going on.
also if you are in a rust state check closely for rusted out spots. if there are bubbles in the paint it not just surface rust. they rust from the inside out. No scrap and paint will help it already got a hole through the metal.
also check the blow by. I think that its bad if oil is spitting out of the oil filler cap. From what some of these guys say is that smoke coming from the dipstick and oil filler cap is not that bad, only if there is oil spitting out. I could be wrong but i am sure if i am that one of these guys will straighten it out for me. Hope it works out.
FYI, PSD's only came in the 1994 & 1/2 model and they all had manual transmissions. The eight digit in the VIN is and "F" for a PSD and a "K" for an IDI
Oh yeah I keep forgetting he is taking a 94. like Plowhand said no auto option on 94.5 PSD. if its an auto its a 7.3 IDI. so now you you need to listen for a rattle or banging noise when you shut the truck off. These 5sp equipped truck have a two piece flywheel. when they go bad (torsion/dampner spring wear out/break) they rattle and bang when they are shut off.
Well maybe its a little later like a 1995 because it is definatly as PSD and it is definatly an automatic. I know that it is an earlyer than 1997 model because that is what I was really wanting.
