I vote with BBC....keep it above half a tank until you get the issue resolved because you don't want to deal with hurting your injectors...unless you've hit the lottery lately.
My WAG would be a bad float. How many miles do you have on it? Still under warranty?
I have an 06 that does a similar thing , but it seems to be some kind of program that is shutting off the injectors to keep you from completely running out of gas , but this happens to mine when there is 15 miles left till empty dissplayed on my instrument cluster message dissplay . Then it stops as soon as I fill up .
05', 53000 miles, just bought it in Jan. 07, within the 2nd week drove below 1/4 tank and started sputtering, no power, put it in shop they replaced 2 injectors. @wekks after that got below 1/4 tank again, this time just below, starts doing the same thing, put diesel in it and it rans fine. Since then I haven't let it drop below 1/4, and it runs fine. Any more thoughts on what I should do?
I agree with the earlier coment of the fuel level gauge may be out of calibration , I'm not sure if the 05 has the same function as my 06 were the computer shuts off the injectors to prevent a totall run out of fuel , but I would think the computer is using the fuel level indicator as input to the computer to activate this function . You may want to right down your milage and how much fuel you put in at fill up and do a little math to watch your real fuel milage .

Lack of Power, Trucks with Steel Tanks:
Some trucks may have a lack of power due to low fuel pressure from a plugged fuel filter or in-tank pickup tube, or restricted fuel lines. This could be caused by the steel tank lining becoming de-laminated/flaking off. If this occurs, the tank will need to be replaced, along with the plugged components. Be aware that using biodiesel with more than 5% concentration (B5) may cause this to happen. The replacement tanks do have a more resistant coating to help prevent this occurance, however Ford still recommends using no higher than B5 biodiesel. Broadcast Message 6865.
Check Engine Light on with P0460 Fuel Level Sensor Code:
This may be caused by a miscommunication of fuel level ststus between the instrument cluster and engine computer. This code is set when the engine computer does not see the fuel level dropping it expects. It may be caused by customer-installed items, such as a remote start system that does not power the dash when activated, an over-sized fuel tank or in-bed fuel tank. If these conditions do not exsist, the engine computer should be reprogrammed using WDS/IDS version 43.4 or higher. This condition can also be caused by fueling with the engine running, parking on an angle, or driving up a long grade. In some cases the fuel level sender may be faulty, or have a sulfur build up on the sender and have code P463(use Chevron Techron Plus Concentrate to correct). TSB 06-13-11
05 F-Series/Excursion Inaccurate Fuel Level on Low Mileage Trucks:
Some trucks may have an inaccurate fuel level indicated by the gauge at low miles. This may be due to being transported to the dealership at an angle. It may take driving for up to half a tank of fuel to correct. The gauge may self correct if the batteries are disconnected for a minute, then reconnected, or leaving the key on (engine off) for 15 minutes with the truck parked on a level surface.
