1996 7.3 liter 4x4 with 186,000 miles how mucher longer does a diesel last if i have changed oil every 3,000 miles. Has never pulled a trailer. Just a daliy driver
Another 186K easily. If you take care of it and don't abuse it you could expect 5-600K total. Someone here just posted going over 700K! These are very stout engines. Keep up the oil changes with diesel rated oil, good insurance. I like 5w40 synthetic but it's kinda expensive. USe good filters too, Motocraft is my choice but there are many others (baldwin, wix, ect ect) other will chime in here with more recommendations. Do not use FRAM. They by-pass way too easily sending dirty oil right back into the engine.
If you still have the stock intake you need to be sure it's not leaking dirt past the filter. They are notorious for doing this and will eventually dust your turbo, the engine doesn't like it either. You can see the turbo impeller with the top off the air filter, just look down the intake tube. The blades should look sharp, not rounded over.
it will keep on trucking for lots of miles. If your in the salty states during the winter the body will fall off before then engine gives up. I just bought my 97 crew cab with 219K on it in December. I plan to go to atleast 500k. I am over half way now with 230K. Like Jim said keep the oil changed and the dirt out of the engine and unless something freak happens you will be good to go. Maintence is key, oil, coolant, coolant additives, fuel/air/oil filters, tranny maintence and steering and suspension maintence are key.
I have read that some powerstroke with good maintenance (even with hard work) has lasted more than a 1,000,000 miles (one million), there are one in some museum. so dont worry OK?
Great motor! The body is the first to go - or at least the metal unprotected parts. I have put on new brake lines, fuel lines, fuel tanks, and powersteering lines plus there is body rust. But the motor cranks right up!
wait a minute!!! Is that lincoln tech guy Kyle !!!??? If its not then this is freeky because my friend kyle is looking to buy a 96 with that many miles that i found for him. It has to be him!!! If not i bet he knows him! Also my friend kyle is going to lincoln tech so every thing makes sense. If this is the right person... The body of the truck in question is damn near perfect! p.s. this is travis
