Keyless entry remote

I have a 93 Explorer and only one remote. I've looked for a remote on ebay, but they are 3 button (mine is only 2) and the numbers on some others don't match. Can anyone give me some guidance?
Thanks
Annette

Did '93 have a factory remote option? I didn't think those came until later. Are you sure your's isn't an aftermarket installation? If it is factory, I know that my 2001 came with the 3 button, but the 4 button works just fine.

Gee...I'm not entirely sure, but it is a Ford remote, so either factory or dealer installed....guess I need to make a stop at the Ford dealership.

Does anyone know how to program a remote? Is it possible it just needs to be programmed??

Not sure about the '93, but here's the procedure for a 2001. If you have your manual, you can check it for your programming procedure. Unfortunately, the site where you download manuals only goes back to '96's.

Programming remote transmitters
It is necessary to have all (maximum of four — original and/or new) of
your remote transmitters available prior to beginning this procedure.
To program the transmitters yourself:
² Place the key in the ignition and
turn from 2 (LOCK) to 3 (OFF)
and cycle between 3 (OFF) and
4(ON) eight times in rapid
succession (within 10 seconds)
with the eighth turn ending in the
4 (ON) position. The doors will
lock/unlock to confirm that
programming mode has been
entered.
² Within 20 seconds, program a
remote transmitter by pressing any button on a transmitter. The doors
will lock/unlock to confirm that the remote transmitter has been
programmed. (If more than 20 seconds pass before pressing a remote
transmitter button, the programming mode will exit and the procedure
will have to be repeated.)
² Repeat the previous step to program additional remote transmitters.
The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that each remote transmitter has
been programmed.
² When you have completed programming the remote transmitters, turn
the ignition to 3 (OFF). Again the doors will lock/unlock to confirm
programming has been completed.

Well, looks like it's not the programming

I think I will have to go through the dealer for a remote too because I can't find a 2 button anywhere....

Thanks so much for the help though!

Is there a special remote according to my VIN number? Can I go on eBay purchase one for a 97 Explorer and then use your instructions to program it?
Thank you for your time

You can get a remote by year, but you need to be certain your Explorer has the remote keyless entry option. It was not as common on the 97's as it is now. If it has the option, I would expect to see a keypad on the drivers door. As to the programing procedure, you should be able to find it in your owners manual. If you don't have an owners manual, you can download one for free at this site;
