How come no firewall access?

I just finished replacing the heater core in my '73 F100 2WD 302 C4 for the second time..orig. was leaking, the first new one leaked after I got it all installed, the second new one (got smart and tested it first) seems ok. I guess most of you know what a pain this is to do...pulling out the entire housing from under the dash. My question is this: Why couldn't Ford have made a door in the firewall just to be able to pull the heater core out? And for the blower motor for that matter? Or for anything else under/behind the dash? Seem like a no-brainer. Anybody heard me?

That whole system is strange but it is no different than many other vehicles. Anything to do with the HVAC system or under the dash is a pain.

Why??? So my neighbors can wonder what all the cussing is about!!! Then there is the blower; the entire weight of the fan rests on the front bearing of the elecrtric motor, and extends away from that support. I think they planned on selling a few of those replacement parts.

I hear ya though, I've worked on a few '70s and '80s sedans that you removed the hoses in the engine bay, un-latched the glove box, removed a small cover and the core slid out.

Are you old enough to remember the ads with the clear light bulb? The slogan was "Ford has a better idea!" I'll stop there.

Same reason GM put a Starter solenoid right on the starter so a person gets to muck in the grease & Grime just to get the engine started. Usually happens when one is in a white shirt & suit.

Bad Design....Not caring about DIY'er...want them to take to Ford shop.... pay $125.00/hr

This is the entire answer... AND because its a PITA they stiff you with yet another hour. This is the entire reason they've made things such a PITA with newer vehicles. Some vehicles even put the oil filter in horrible places just so you don't DIY.

There is only one thing driving parts placement and design at Ford, -ASSEMBLY COST!!! They can care less that you need to remove 10 parts just to get to the fuel pressure regulator or the starter etc.
