For what engine and year? I've actually never heard any negative comments about the Volant. Lots of people in the F-150 forum run them and are quite in love with them.
I have a volant set up for my 01 4.0 auto 4x4 i had issues with oiling problems and the maf sensor i changed the filter to an oiless AEM filter and put the prefilter over it and it runs great.....sounds great too
The truck is a 98 4.0 4x4 xlt manual trans.I have put a Comp Cams 410 cam in it and a set of JBA headers.I have just rebuilt the engine and had it balanced.
That's a nice little build. Can I ask why you went with the 410 and not the 422? I assume you're going for high end power, if you're not then scratch that question. Might want to look into a chip as well. If you have one custom burned for what mods you have, you could turn out with a good jump in power.
I suggest the Volant, but going with a dry-flow filter from AEM is never a bad idea, since apparently according to Steve you have to oil the Volant. I could have sworn it was a dry filter, but either way.
I went with the 410 because the truck is a daily driver and I had heard that the 422 had a bit of idle issue so I went with the 410.I had hear the the 422 was better suited for a higher level of mod than my pocket was capable of.
My personal opinion is, that the volant doesn't apear much better than the stock system, which is pretty good on a ranger. It does give you a cone filter and good filter protection, thats a plus. The down side, it's an oiled filter, not so good on a ford. I find the AEM intake to be one of the better intakes for the ranger, it has the open element design with sealed heat dam and an oilfree filter. I would be running that intake right now if they had one available for the 04 4.0. I have the AEM on my focus and it's of excellent quality, it's a true cai, so the filter is located in the fender well, there for the heat dam doesn't come into play on the focus application. Another good system is the airaid quickfit, it utilizes the bottom part of the stock airbox for great filter protection, it's open element with a sealed heat dam and I believe airaid is now offering the dryflow filter as well, no oil. The volant tends to be a little to enclosed for my liking, however, that does have some advantages in filter protection, but so does the stock box. The only time you really get a lot of heat soak on an open element intake is at idle. With the filter postioned at the air opening in the header panel, as long as the truck is in motion you get a steady stream of outside air rushing into the filter and with a sealed heat dam that seales to the bottom of the hood, heat soak is kept to a minumin, at least at the filter. All system will pickup heat in the airtube going to the tb including the stock system. Yeah, volant is good, but I believe there are better, just my .02.
Volant has always been an oil filter since i have had my set up going on 2 years now. Between that and the huge exhaust and my programmer set on the 93 octane setting the truck does scoot along. The 4.10 help too lol
only thing that has been a waist of time was the throttle body spacer.
the other thing that helps to is the red and blue emergency lights on the dashboard too lol im a vollie emt/ff.
looking for some 265/75/16 tires to replace my 245/75/16 bfgs there starting to wear and even though i have 7/32 on the tread left im picky on my feet for my truck.
anyway thanx guys for a great post system
