So as some of you guys know I was looking into having my heads rebuilt on my 351M in my 79 bronco. Machine shop wanted $350 and I needs another $260 for parts so I was looking at about $610 total to have new heads.
For what I want to do with my rig a built 400 is going to handle exactly what I need it to do. The switch from my 351M to the 400 doesn't take nearly as much effort as swapping in a 460. But that's just my thang, everyone elses agenda as well as opinions are different on the matter.
For ****s and giggles I checked the store, he doesn't have any 429/460's on hand.
that's cool, i was tryin to ba a smart a** or anything i did'nt know there was a diff, in the block's. figured they where the same? what is diff, between them? i got a buddy with a 429 in a old t-bird i was thinking about tryin to talk him out of. and how good are the 351m's? i wonder if i should just re-build mine
A rebuilt anything is not NOS...NOS means NEW Old Stock. Rebuilt and/or remanufactured isn't new, no matter how you slice it. I'd want to know exactly who rebuilt the engines before I bought one. Ford didn't sell rebuilt engines after 1951. They contracted with engine rebuilders nationwide to be able to offer rebuilt engines (and other parts) through their dealers.
Authorized Ford rebuilders like Genuine Parts Distributors (Tomador Engine Co.) on the West Coast used quality parts that met Ford's standards. Many "chain" engine rebuilders like Pep Boys and Sears, or catalog sellers like JC Whitney used the cheapest parts available, basically whatever they could get..as long as it lasted through whatever warranty period they offered. Ford Authorized rebuilt engines carried a one year, 12,000 warranty. The chain and catalog "rebuilders" warranty was usually 90 days, 4,000 miles.
Caveat Emptor: 1975 and later 351M/400 engines were subject to head cracking. Ford authorized rebuilders never used welded cylinder heads on their rebuilt engines. If a head was found to be cracked, it was sold for scrap.

what about 460's maybe you could have stepped up allittle
That place didn't have any 400M's or 460's. I only found one 460 on ebay for $1700 plus shipping. Believe me if the price jump was less I would have gone with the 460. But for $600($1000 shipped) the 351M will do the job. Before I put it in I think I might do some work to it. Maybe a cam and headers. I am for sure putting on a holley 4 barrel truck avenger carb and edelbrok manifold. I am going to call Tim over "Tmeyers inc" and start asking questions when I figure out how much more money I have to spend.
