HPOP help please

I have tried doing the searches so if I missed something cut me some slack please I am new to the site, and I am needing some advice ASAP
I joined that notorious oil leak club awhile back so I figure it is the lines of course (nope) maybe the end cap (nope) after cleaning the valley out a couple of times and running it awhile and reaching all around the HPOP I discover that the oil is coming from the bottom side of the HPOP where it mates up. So I figure a gasket. Now here is where I need some advice or help or whatever. I decide to go pay the $46 to have the stealership take a look at it since I have been told that a gasket failing on these is next to unheard of. So now they are telling me that my HPOP is bad or is going bad.
Is there a weep hole down there or something? What makes a leak at that location mean a bad pump, and with the right tools and mechanical ability how hard is it to swap them out? Doesnt look like much to me.

thanks in advance for any info.
Joe

Hi Joe,
Welcome to the site!
I've yet to replace the HPOP, but will be putting a 17* SD HPOP on my OBS soon. From the research I've done, it's a pretty straight forward bolt on process. Do some searching down in the 7.3 forums and you'll find lot's of good info.

The list of mod's you can do is endless... depends on how much money you want to spend.

The HX crossover mod is supposed to make the engine idle and run smoother.
Several sponsors sell the line. There's been some debate over the rigid SS line
vs. the SS Braided flexible line. I'm going with the rigid line from ITP.

The CCV mod reroutes the crankcase ventilation out of the intake. I think the benefit to this mod is to keep the oil out of the intake & turbo.

Some other mods that you might want to consider-

Adding an aftermarket intake- Most seem to like the Tymar, and the AFE2.
The AFE is quite a bit more $$$.

Adding a Turbo Back 4" Exhaust- I think you truck is a 99, so the 4" downpipe should fit. MBRP, Magnaflow, and Diamond Eye are popular choices.

Gauges- Pyrometer to monitor your EGT's (exhaust gas temps), Boost (looks cool and you can tell if you develop a boost leak), Tranny Temp (if you have an auto) seem to be the most popular. Isspro and Autometer are good choices. You can mount them in serveral places and some vendors sell complete kits.

Chip- This would probably be the next thing to do to boost performance and possible increase fuel economy. You'll definately want to do the intake, exhaust and gauges first. Jody Tipton and Tony Wildman have great reputations for the quality of their tunes. There are others, but I hear these names the most.

Next in line if your bank account permits-
Upgrade the fuels system including the regulated return.
Upgrade the injectors to Stage I, Stage II, etc. Depends on what you want.
Upgrade your HPOP to provide enough oil for your upgraded injectors.
Upgrade your transmission (if auto) so it can handle the HP you are making.
BTS (Brians Truck Shop) has an excellent reputation, as does John Wood, for
building bullet proof auto's for high HP PSD's. Suncoast is another good option.

Spend some time searching and reading. There's a lot of information out there! Good luck and have fun!

Thanks baddog. I have been looking into a couple of the mods you have mentioned. Unfortunatly I think all of that just took a back seat. Right now I have all my cash in some realestate investments, and now the HPOP has let go on me. From what I have found so far is over $600 just in parts. The local dealer told me about $800 and they would do it all. I am going to go up and make sure that is the case and for a bit over $100 someone else will be doing the work this time. I just dont have the time as I am trying to close some of these rehab deals and get some coin back into pocket.

Cheapest HPOP I have found around here is $550 does anyone have any other avenues to a cheaper price? They told me part number 5C3Z9VA543BRM My 99 was built in 8/98. I figured with that and the o ring and seal kits and high pressure line tool I would be well over $600.
Let me know what you can
thanks again
Joe

Hey Joe -

$550 seems pretty good - check the sponsors on this site (found at the top of the page when browsing a forum) for pricing as well - you can't go wrong with any of them - if you've got the time I'd imagine that some of the gurus in the 7.3 DIESEL forum would be able to help you out. If you don't have the time, well, find out and get in writing the guarantee on the parts & labor from whatever shop you have do it.

Man Joe that sucks, well any down time sucks!! Where can you get a 17* HPOP? I was wondering if it would make any sense getting a 17* (I was told early 99 have a 15*) w/ stock injectors?

I agree with papa... $550 does not sound to bad for a HPOP. I've seen them advertised for $649 or so from some of the sponsors. Figure labor around $80-100/hr.

Hi Mongo, the 17* pumps supply more oil to the injectors. Probably not needed for your stock injectors, but from what I've read if you go above Stage I, more oil is a good idea. Several of the vendors have them...

I am not realy sure where you got the 17 and 15 from. I am quessing the part number.
That is just what one of the dealerships told me.
Midway Ford here in Kansas City is where I got the $542.34 quote. I did not get the part number from them so he probably quoted me on the right pump. He said there where 3 diffrent pumps listed for 99 and quoted me one after Igot the build date.
Ya I plan on returning to Harrisonville Ford and try to get him to committ to the $800 quote that he gave me. I am due for a break after the damn dear decided she wanted to play chicken Friday night on top of the luck I have been having already. Did a nice job on my drivers side doors.
Thank you all very much this seems like a real helpful site.
I am here to stay.
Later
Joe

Joe- the 13, 15, and 17 are the amount of degrees in the "pump ramp". The way these pumps are built is like this- there is a shaft that rotates inside, and you could imagine it's hooked up to probably 6 arms, which end in small pistons. These small pistons act just like an impeller wheel in a water pump, except instead of flexing, they go up and down and draw in oil as they go up. As the shaft rotates, the small pistons go up, and back down a ramp. Just like a cam going up & down a camshaft in your engine. That ramp they go up is either 13, 15, or 17 degrees. Of course the higher the ramp degree, the more oil each piston will suck and conversly pump to the heads. THe 17* pump is aftermarket only- Ford did not put that one in stock. From what I was told, my early 99 has a 15* pump, but I could be wrong?? Anyone know what years got what pumps??

hey Joe -

Two suggestions -

1. update your profile and put in your location - city & state would be enough (that way locals will know they are locals for you!)
2. once you are eligible, add a signature to your profile - I think you have to have 25 posts maybe..?? but in your signature if you put that you have an early-99 PSD & details (crew, 4X4, auto or stick, mods, etc.) then the people here will be able to help troubleshoot, offer advice, and generally offer more specific help from you

otherwise, in every post where you ask a question, you'll get asked: what year? 4x4? mods? mileage? gets a little redundant

and you are 100% right - this forum is incredible with the user community we have here... you can't beat it - you might want to become a supporter as well - i'll be the cheapest & best investment in your truck
