yea, i never thought about it, but why would they allow a non citizen to purchase and own guns?

i understand maybe if it was a hunting rifle or shotgun, something that would obviously be used for hunting, but semi autos?

and even with that, the requirements should be much more stringent than with a citizen.

not that it would have helped and if it was to much trouble he would have bought one off the street, but i consider it 2 different subjects.

little reading for you. stats from 2005. 223 firearms related homicides in 2005. that's 2.03 firearms homicides per 100,000 people

and this is fromm 2005 in the US http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_vio...ates#Homicides

which states that in 2005 the homicide rate in metropolitan centers in the US the gun related homicide rate was 6.1 for every 100,000 and in non metropolitan centers it was 3.5 per 100,000. If you average out the 2 you get 4.8 per 100,000 which is more than double the rate of Canada

Everyone always wants to avoid the real issue at hand. The fact he used a gun is a moot point, but anytime something happens that involves guns the first reaction is stiffer gun control measures. Had the kid used a bomb, people wouldn't be calling for the ban on fertilizer of half the chemicals under your sink so the whole issue of gun control can just stop right there.

This punk had big issues, issues addressed more than once about his rage and his violent tendencies. In fact he was released from a mental institution prior with the comments that he was a danger not only to himself but others around him. He had never lashed out in violent ways that warranted legal action in the past but I think it's obvious that the warning signs were ignored.

The one thing that really pisses me off about this punk and so many others like him was his constant anger about America and people here. I have a clue for you junior, if you hate America so bad, go somewhere else we don't need you here, we don't want you here.

Gun control is a subject in itself. Maybe if his name was added to the "nut" list after he was released from the institution he might not have been able to buy a gun legally. So he would have bought it illegally.

There are probably more people killed by doctors and hospitals than by guns.

What we are seeing in my opinion, is more of the eroding of values and respect for others, too much effort given to protecting somebodies privacy, too little attention given to parents responsibility. The government has no answers, only opinions, and all different. Our society is different from other countries. And I believe it is going down the drain.

Indy is right, we should not tolerate people being here who hate America. They should not have to right to be here. All the warning signs were ignored with this kid, and there are 32 families destroyed as victims, and another trying to live with the fact that their son did all this.

My own son had a bad reaction to some allergy medication that lasted for about 3 months. It was really bad. I had him to many doctors including a shrink. I woke up one morning to hear him moaning in his room. When I went in I found him on the floor, unable to function. I called the doctor to ask what I could do for him. The doctor told me that since my son was over 18 he could not discuss it with me because of privacy issues, and he said good bye. Where did this attitude ever come from? Privacy is not always the answer.

When somebody like this idiot at VT is considered to be a threat to himself and to others, then it should be made known. Not let him loose and have this tragic result.

I think we have gone so far with rights and privacy that it has become a curse. And I think it has gone too far to fix it.

Having said all that, I have no answers. I feel bad for all the families involved. And nothing will change what has happened. I have a daughter away in college. It could have been her school. If you have kids you should call them and tell them you love them.

Sorry, I am starting to ramble. I'll shut up now.

There have been school shootings in Canada also. And I agree, gun control is not the solution, as it will only keep guns out of the honest person's hands. If a criminal wants a gun he will get one no matter how illegal it is. I agree that arming the teachers would be a good idea, and the students would not need to know they are armed. Wouldn't want the students to try and steal the gun or gang up on the teacher to take it away forcibly.

Once again, the liberals are jumping on the gun control issue! What if this jerk had killed them with an unregistered knife, or an unregistered bomb, or had poisoned the food or water? Bottom line is we all have to stop accepting that we have people who hate Americans, we have to amend the stupid privacy rules, and we have to act on those who exhibit irrational or severe emotional issues. This is crap that this jerk exhibited psychological disorders and no one did nothing! Why am I so angry? Because one of the victims lived less than 20 miles from me. Instead of planning a graduation party the family has to plan a funeral. We all must step up to the plate and do whatever we can to change some of the rules. If you are here on a visa and say you hate Americans and America, then you should be on the next flight out of here........

We need to separate the person doing the evil from his tool he uses . Its the criminals we need to spend our time on if we ever are going to solve this problem. Gun control isn't the answer. But the gun haters will use this shooting to try to impose gun bans instead trying to find a way to get the medical info on dangerous people on record to stop their ability to buy guns. Its one of the questions on the form you sign to buy a gun. You must state you haven't been proven mentally unstable. There needs to be a way for this info to be found when the background check is run to purchase a gun. We don't need more gun control. We need this problem in the background check fixed.

i believe in the right to have and bear arms. while we cant have students running around campuses with semi automatics perhaps certain faculty members should be allowed to carry firearms and be trained to use them. Kinda like sky marshalls . Noone has to know who they are ( could ya see yourself walking into professor smiths class and he lays a derringer on the desk??) but when guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns

As to the Virginia Tech gunman i think loopholes in the law need to be closed the computers between the nuthouse and the jail need to be linked and anything that one is cited for should be checked so that when they punch in the name birthday etc it comes up with everything then let someone manually check to see whether the contact with police was a moving violation, a jaywalking ticket or a mental meltdown. Maybe they should have a three day waiting period from the time you apply to buy a gun and the time you pick it up so they can check to find out if you should have one or not
whatever the case tho guns should not be outlawed

He was a nutcase, no way no how nutcases should be able to buy guns.

This isn't "gun control" this is common sense. Theres probably more crazy people
on the loose than there is locked up in mental institutes.

Yep this loophole needs to be closed. Mental patient records need to be added to the items used by the FBI for the background check. Its just common sense & it should be possible to do it. I'd be willing to pay a higher fee for the background check to cover the cost of getting this record added to stop mentally ill persons from getting guns

Multiple victim homicides with more than 2 victims are less than 1% of homicides.

Mental health issues should be on the list of DQ's for gun purchases, and it's just insane for it not to be.

If you think wacko-weird nasty stuff never happened when you were a kid, go read "In Cold Blood". 1959. The good old days. Right.
