Hey, After getting my truck fixed after months, now I'm hearing something strange. When I turn the steering 1/2 or more I hear what sounds like a spring pulling and kind of squeaking. I have to pull a heavy trailer next week.!!! Please tell me this isn't something major and I'll be going down the highway and no steering. I'm about spent out on this truck so I hope its something simple.
Thanks everyone
My truck is starting do something similiar but my problem is small. It is the contacts behind the steering wheel for the horn and cruise controls. It sounds like a small spring and it is rubbing on brass. I hope this all your problem is.
Make sure the res is topped off and belt is good. Also I'd get it on blocks and check all the suspension components. Hard to say for sure till you isolate where the sound is coming from...
Its sounds like its coming from the steering column. Its not a real loud noise. Kinda like a spring on a old screen door. I had a new front end put under it last year. Is there something in there that can break lose? Hopefully not. If there are springs in there what do they do?
Thanks again
Neal probabgly nailed it then. You can pull the steering wheel and check the contacts. Also possible the bushings and such are bad. But unlikely it will cause any problems in the immediate future
agree with neal, you're probably fine. mine makes that squeeking noise sometimes in the column. but, if you are worried about the steering/susp...
1. raise vehicle till wheels are off ground, NOT by the axle.
2. grab wheel at 1 o'clock and 7. push with one hand while pulling with other back and forth. shouldn't be any play (balljoints). grab at 3 and 9 o'clock. push with one hand while pulling with other to check for play in steering linkage, gear box, etc.
3. repeat for other side.
4. place large pry bar or 2x4 etc. under each wheel and lift up to further check ball joints and this should also move springs and shocks a little to see how they are doing
it's helpful to have a buddy around so if you do feel something one of you can look during the tests to see what's wrong. 2nd person can tell you if it's a tie rod that's loose or you just pushed hard enough to move the whole steering system, or if ball joints are bad or you pushed hard enough to start compressing springs.
