i seem to have a problem w/my steering..i can actually pull the steering wheel towards me when sitting in my truck...and actually pull it to where i can't shift untill i push the steering wheel back down...doing this and looking into the eng. compartment at the flexible coupling(wich looks like a rag joint) it to moves back and forth ..now i'm not shure if i'm missing something or if that flexible coupling needs to be replaced or what...
The entire column mounts to the cab in two places. One bracket is like butterfly wings and attach on each side to the bottom of the dash. You need to pull that cover off to see it. The other mounting point is a flange that connects on the firewall by way of bolts going through the firewall. How much is your column moving? Is it just the wheel itself coming up and down or the entire column?
Okay, then that's a whole nother can of worms. If you feel up to the task, rebuild the column, if not (which I wouldn't bother) go get one from a junkyard.
You can look up a thread I posted on Oct 8 about my gearshift/steering column. There's a good parts blow up there and some info you might be able to use.
the bearings are shot you have to pull the steering wheel, then pull the column there is a snap ring unde the signal switch unclip it the whole sector comes out the plastic doohicket at the bottom holds the bearing for the bottom the metal ring at the top holds the top bearing they are just little caged ball bearings easier to find a new cloumn that has good bearingsIMO
