"Creaking" Power steering

hey guys, i'm having some trouble with my power steering in my 77 f250. for the past week or 2 something has been creaking when i turn. i know its something in the steering, because ive had this problem before... unfortunately, i dont remember what fixed it!? a couple weeks before the creaking started, i noticed that the steering was wanting to pull to the direction that i had turned last, after i had straightened her out after the turn (i hope that sentence makes sense to you... for example: if i turned left, the truck would pull slightly left until i made a right turn.)
also, i can feel the creaking and a little bit of a "popping" feeling in the steering wheel while turning.
any ideas guys?
thanks a lot,
aaron

Is this a 2wd? I would first suspect the kingpins are sticking. Try to grease them. If you can't get them to take grease, try heating a little with torch - just enough to soften old grease. If that still won't work, then look into having them replaced. Might have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you listen to pinpoint the creak.

Parts tend to last alot longer with proper lubrication. When was the last time you greased all the chassis components?

Kingpins can last for 200,000 miles if lubricated properly.

Popping and creaking can also come from a broken frame or extremely bad bushings. Failure to return to center can also be caused by bad bushings or worn steering box.

man i would be lying if i said we had gone through and greased up all the chassis stuff. i only plan on owning this truck for another year and a half... when i get my BA im getting something newer and less problem prone. so i dont think im gonna be motivated enough to do a complete lubrication run-down, i just keep all the fluids under the hood full and the rear end lubed up.

and i remember now that we didnt actually replace the kingpins, we just torched em up like 73 custom was saying... maybe thats why they are nasty again.
