Does anyone know how to get the rear tailgate window up when
it is stuck completey down. I read the techticle on replacing
the motor but I can't even check out the motor because its
behind the glass. I've been looking at Chiltons and Hayes wiring
diagrams and I think I may have a bad window limit switch.
At first the window worked fine as long as I didn't roll it down
all the way. It would get stuck and after slamming the tail gate
a few times it would come back up. My wife lowered it all the way again and it hasen't come up for about a month. I tired of
not having a window and ready to tear into this.
I bet somebody out there has had to overcome this.
My first bet is that you have a wiring problem. Since the window is in the down position check the following:
Carefully check ALL the wires in the harness that passes through the tailgate and through the rear taillight assembly. Check the connector plug under the truck (keep following the harness and you will find it). Then check where the wires pass to the motor near the bottom of the down glass (you have to have access panel removed). Those are the 3 most common places to find a broken wire or corroded connection.
The tailgate motor is "polarity" switching. Once you have the harness completely apart (exposed) you can try probing with a hot lead from the battery.
If you window was working and just quit chances are a bad connection. The wole process is time comsuming and frustrating but very necessary on most old broncos.
If you find a broken wire I would recommend that you replace entire sections of the wire and SOLDER your connections. Visit your local hardware store and get heavy duty covered appliance wire as used on an electric drill or grinder.
The worst case scenario is you will have to drill the rivits (or remove the bolts that hold the glass in but, be very careful) and remove the glass for full motor access.
As was said on the previous post, it sounds like an wiring problem. Do this:
Remove the cover of the inside of the tailgate. Locate the 'interlock switch'. It's on the driver's side wall of the inside of the tailgate. It's a plunger switch that keeps the glass from operating when the gate is opened. Plunger up, glass works, plunger down it doesn't. Locate the switch & pop it loose from its mounting position. The plunger will be up. Now try & operate the window & see if it works. If so, your problem is solved. You can replace the switch, or put it back in, being careful to see to it that it it doesn't get stuck (which you can't). You might just leave it loose & out of its proper location. You'll just have to be careful not to operate the glass with the tailgate down, because it will now operate even with the tailgate open. You will have removed the safety switch to keep this from happening.
my indow was similar. I ran a hard line from my battery and switch in the dash to see if the problem was in the harness. I simply ran power from the dash switch directly to the motor through the cab. That worked and I realized I had a bad limiter swithch that was talked about in the last response so I just bipassed it and all is fine now.
I don't have a Tailgate window.. but I do have a tailgate motor and arm assembly forsale in Boston Mass. Make me a decent offer and pay shipping and its yours....

I can just about guarantee that your problem is simple.
When the tailgates close on these Broncos the left door latch "makes" a switch which is attached to the lathing mechanism on the inside of the door. This switch completes the circuit to the switch wich controls the window motor. This probably explains why when you slam the door it works. The switch can easily be adjusted after you take the inside tailgate cover off. This is a safety switch so you aren't allowed to operate the window unless the door is shut. If not you could possibly break the window if it was half way up and shut the door or something like that.
I have an 1989 Bronco and the window is in the down position. I cannot get it to move at all. How can I manually move the window to access the motor? The passenger side of the window is out of the track. I have looked all around and cannot find any information on how to move the window.
I had a the same problem with my window not to long ago. The wire for the motor need seperated from the motor. I had to drill into the tailgate, right above each rivet to drill the rivets out. Once I had the rivets out the glass slid right out for me. when I went to to reinstall it I used 4 short bolts and lock nuts. It works fine now. Hope this help.
Are the 78 tailgate windows any easier? I have a window that works only sometimes on cool days and almost never on hot days(down but almost never up) and this just recently started to happen. Also the tailgate latch will not open the tailgate and I removed the cover from the inside and I can't seem to be able to reach anything worth adjusting or replacing.

man...I love the internet...On another forum I read of 3 or 4 other guys replaceing thier motors...for at least 100 bucks...this fix cost me about 5 bucks...and some of my time.
There's no easy fix for the tailgate latches. Figure on removing them about every two years, greasing them up good, and putting them back in. And no, there's no easy way to get them in and out. Just keep in mind that it can be done.
For your reference, you can run the window glass out and work on the tailgate with it open - as long as you remember not to drop any tools on it!
