Scanning ABS Codes

My ABS light is coming on and I see there are codes that can be scanned to help analyze the problem.

I have a scanner (Autotap) but it only does drivetrain codes for some reason. Is there something different about ABS codes? I assume they they come out through the same connector as the other codes - correct?

I hope this isn't one of those things where you need a $1000 scanner only available to dealers who know the secret mechanics' handshake

For $1000 or 2, you will have the needed secret handshake. It's not restricted to only dealers.

AutoTap software has no prayer of accessing the supplementary systems. No support.

OTC and others make a code reader for ABS and air bags. Yes they are expensive.

I had an ABS light come on my 99 EB and it turned out to be a rear speed sensor(on top of the rear diff). It costs around $23, held on by one screw and one pulg. This seems to be a pretty common problem on this model. Do a search, there is thread that has pictures on the replacement.

davisenvy - I found that the rear speed sensors are a common failure item. I found in the repair manual a test procedure for the speed sensors that involves measuring resistance between the sensor leads and ground. I'm going to pull my meter out and test the sensors - maybe one of them will turn out to be the culprit. I may replace the rear one anyway given it's low cost.

If that doesn't work, I'll have the bread down and pay a shop to scan it for me.

Good luck! I bet that it is the speed sensor. Let me know what you find.

I agree that it is a good bet that it is the sensor on the rear differential. I have replaced one on my 98 and also on a friends 2000 Exploder.
