1997 explorer

i just bought a 97 explorer and the abs light is on is there a way to pull the codes without an abs scanner?

Nope, you'll need an ABS capable scan tool to retrieve the ABS system diagnostic codes. Some of the chain auto parts stores do sell a consumer grade ABS and SRS enabled scan tool that might work for your 97 Explorer.

changed the vss in the rear axle and that fixed it

how did you determine that was need to be changed (VSS)?
