bad alternator????

99xlt 5.4 2wd.
battery indicator light on right side of dash intermittent to solid on at 60 mph and up.

watched the charge meter steadily go from 3/4 to bottom followed by a complete loss of insturment cluster and electrical function. Engine stumbled a couple of times then dead. I pulled off the freeway and when I reduced speed the engine refired and I got back my insturments and electrical function.

checked for loose or corroded terminals and they were good.

On surface streets, (no freeway) light comes on then goes off with no loss in the charge indicator. If I exceed 2000 rpm, the light comes on steady.

I'm thinking the regulator in the alternator is shot.

I'll take it and have the charging system checked in the morning, but it sure is acting like the regulator.

By the way, it is throwing no engine fault codes.

When the light comes on at higher RPM's it is usually a sign that the alternator is on its way out.
