If you still have anything in the system you can tell by turning the compressor by hand (with the engine off) and listening for a slight hissing noise at the orifice tube. Its OK for the compressor to have a slight drag on it but it should not have any snag spots as you turn it.

It is possible that the compressor cycling switch is the problem, and they are easy to replace.

Did it stop working outright or did it give some warning first?

OK on the black cylinder by the heater plenum.....that is the Suction accumulator dryer. Find the electrical connector for the pressure switch, disconnect it, jumper the connector wires........engine running. The clutch should lockup and compressor start to work if the compressor is OK. Jumpering shows either a low fluid level or a bad pressure switch.......
