i have me a 77 f350 it now has a 78 460. i did an oil change the other night and the drain plug is centered on the engine crossmember. what type of oil pan should this truck have? rear sump? is this the correct style pan? shouldn't the drain plug access be easier? thanks y'all.
That's just how it is I believe. My 79 is 4x4, so it's away from the axle, but my 360 in my 2wd 70 would drain out, and soak everything on the way to the tray...
On my 400 I had a piece of 2" PVC pipe cut at an angle that I would jam in under the pan. I could stick a long extension thru it and pull the plug. It made for a much cleaner oil change since the pipe conducted the oil out to a drain pan.
Even tho I had the pipe cut like above when I pulled the pan to do some bottom end work I put a drain plug in the front corned of mine also. It probably leaves a bit of oil in the pan due to the engine tilt but seems to be good enuf. Now I can just reach under and change the oil and filter without jacking the truck up and crawling underneath.
I think the 4wds got the clean-flow oil options. My Bronco didn't leave a mess when changing oils. My 2wd pickup always make a spill on the crossmember.
Torque, you must be a helluva big guy if you have to jack it up. I could slip underneath easily under my 2wd pickup.
6'4" 230#. I may be able to squeeze my sternum under that greasy F250 crossmember but that is nothing I want to do. With my luck one of the tires would pick that moment to deflate. No way I can get at it from the sides either due to the running boards. I used to just jack it up with the floor jack and support it with a couple jack stands. At my age I no longer want to crawl under at all...
My 76 with a 300 is the same way plug right on top the crossmember not that big of mess though till stream starts to weaken then gets everywere. i think wlamret sold those drain plugs that you could put a tune on and turn valve and it would come out the tube maybe one of those would work. If anyone knows what im talking about.
