Well, I think I'm going to make the switch from an older F100 to a newer F250. I've frequented the 73-79 forum for my 73 F100 and am sure you all will be equally helpful. Anyway, I am going to upgrade my pickup and am looking at a 1995 F250 Extended Cab PSD with 139k miles on it. Aside from the basics that one looks at whenever buying a car, are there any special areas I need to pay attention to when looking at a diesel?
Is there any reason I should look at a 96 or 97 rather than a 95? Or, to put it another way, are there any problems with the 95s?
I am new to the whole diesel thing and am looking forward to the power.
The only reason you want to stay with the 96-97 trucks is because the lend themselves to horsepower more easily. Meaning, if you want bigger injectors, your gonna need bigger oil to drive them sooner or later. Well, on the 95's there is a problem with oil bleed down when you change to a later model HPOP (high pressure oil pump) It has to do with the front cover design that they changed in 96.
if it's an auto, look into what kind of towing life it's had and the maintenance history of the tranny. that's pretty good mileage on it, hard to find under 200k these days. check the springs to see what shape they are in. depending on what part of the country u are in check the rear spring shackle and their mounts, they like to rust out. check all the bushings in the front driveline and suspension. pull the air cleaner to turbo pipe and check the turbo wheel, especially if it's got the stock air cleaner housing. good luck, hope it works out, you'll fall in love with it first drive.
Coolant SCA Levels are a must. Get some test strips from shucks or napa and dip them in the coolant tank and check the levels. More info found on the link above on Baz's page. Good luck!
I suggest you take the next week and read most of the most recent posts on this forum! and take all the advice above. the coolant additives and a peek at the intake tubing and turbo impeller wheel will give you a good glimpse of the maintaince done or not done to the truck in question.
oh yeah. welcome to PSD forum. also fill out your location. I see your in oregon if you public profile is correct. there may be one of us in your back yard that can help you scope out your new prospective truck. Your a little far for me to help but many here would be more than happy to help.
I've been real happy with my '95. About 395,000 on her now, 2nd owner. As mentioned read up on Baz's site.
Figure if it's an auto the Torque converter will need to be swapped soon if not done already. Go with a 2000-up style 3 plate and a shift kit and the tranny will hold up to a mostly stock engine great. Big power mods will require a stronger tranny.
If it's a stick, theres a chance it will need the stock dual mass flywheel replaced.
If the cab sits lower than the bed, you'll want to put poly cab bushings in.
SCA's are important but not as critical as on the 7.3 IDI. I've yet to find a shop that had proof of cavitation damage, and with that low of miles, I doubt there will be a problem there as long as they kept good coolant in it.
Injector o-rings will probably need replaced at some point, not a hard DIY project.
BTW I try to keep up on a 94-97 part numbers page. Useful as engine parts are often much cheaper at IH but they don't always like to sell to Ford owners. PART NUMBERS PAGE
JOAT is that your part number page? I know I have heard your name around. maybe from TDS or some other PSD page. but welcome to FTE.
Yeah, legend has it swamp started the original part number page, then many others copied and added to that. I collected from all of them a couple years ago and added my own stuff and then others started sending me part numbers. I'll get it in my sig as soon as I get to 25 posts...
Originally I was at TDS, but now mostly a bunch of other Ford diesel and biofuel type pages. Thanks for the welcome!
Well JOAT thanks for all your work. I use that page every week along with many others here who use it! also You using WVO or BD? or just looking into it so far? I am planning to homebrew BD with in 2 months!

Good to hear the parts page helps so many. Feel free to throw part number additions or updates at me if you get any.
I initially ran 42,000 miles on WVO, definitely harder on the engne oil in my truck than petro-diesel, but otherwise no probplems. Just had some injectors out and they looked fine other than a little VO related buildup in the fuel passages, but it appeared it would break down and go thru an injector, not clog it. Now I'm running B100, about 15,000 miles so far, used the heated WVO tank for it in winter so haven't bought diesel in 4 months!. Will get a UOA done soon and see how it's affecting the engine oil. Will post the comparisons on that then.
Hmmmm, looks like we're a bit off topic, sorry Jeremy
