hey guys, newbie to THIS forum and F250's but not cars in general. so here's the deal. my bro-in-law has an 89 F250 with a 5.0HO motor insinde. the previous owner did a hack job of an install. we just got it running recently but its running really rich and eating gas (6mpg). i'm just wondering if you guys might know about these particular parts of the TB and if this is whats causing it. the blue dashpot is not hooked up to anything and the jimmy rigged vent doesnt seem to be airtight. also wondering if its computer controlled (is it under the dash?) any help would be appreciated. thanks guys.
here's a pic of the motor. just want to make sure that it's not a 5.0 intake manifold bolted to the block. it's not misfiring, but i will check the timing to make sure it's within spec.
thats why i'm asking about the location of the computer. i'm not too sure where its at. i'm used to ECU's being under the carpet on the pass side. from what it looks like, it's under the dash and behind the radio. is this correct? also, what would the code or "ID" for the ecu to make sure that it's a stang ECU and not the one from the F250. thanks again.
I think on your 89 it is in the middle of the dash under the radio. At least that's where it was on my ex's truck. I'll find you a linkk so you can check the code on her
Sure looks like an 86-88 Mustang SEFI engine. Check my gallary for pics of my conversion from years ago.
As for the blue dashpot as you call it...that is the Idle Speed Control motor. It adjusts idle for cold/ac/in gear situations. I am amazed it isn't hooked up!
Poor mileage, is there a thermostat in it? These engine need to run 190 degrees so the computer doesn't keep it on "cold run" condition (extra rich mixture). Does it surge at idle? Looks like a speed density engine and they do like to surge if not set up correctly. The pcv vent is correct though you are missing the TB warming hoses (not required). The EGR system if not set up correctly can cause poor running, major fuel consumption. Purchase the Probst book on Ford Fuel Injection and start reading.
First off...I'll admit I don't know that much about engines...Now, that being said, I am planning on converting my 4bbl on my 302 HO to a fuel injection setup.
I found a great website....It may have been mentioned on this board before....fordfuelinjection.com. I found the articles pretty informative. There are lists that reference part numbers and such that will help identify computers.
hey guys one more thing. we've taken the TB apart and cleaned it. it idles much stronger but now the idle is surging like kenny said. is the EGR/EVP supposed to be hooked up to the intake (for vacuum)? i can only see it needing a source of vacuum due to the valve inside. we've replaced the PVC and just put a breather on the oil fill neck, and capped off the TB. thanks again.
do you know if a cam has been put in the motor. cause if so then you will get the surging idle because the injector timing is going to be off. i had that problem with mine till I burned a chip for it
there is no after market cam. we took the TB a apart and cleaned it and the sensors. Now idle is much stronger, but it starting to surge. I think it is now the sensors are working properly and have no signal to read off of. Last week we just started up it idle find but just ran rich. Now that everything's been cleaned I feel that the sensors are working properly something is missing/wrong and it's runnig more rich than last weekend. Similar to what kenny said. Any ideas?
thanks
we hooked up the dashpot to the intake maniford vacumm and that solved the rich idle. Now we are having problem w/ slight serging and motor flooding it self out. Sometimes we have to disconnect the fuel relay to start the truck.
Is the dashpot you're referring to the blue thing to the left of the throttle opening in your first picture? If so, that's the EGR valve and should connect to the EGR valve regulator (EVR) so the computer can control it.
