Smile Trouble shoot transfer case?

Have a 1995 f150 that I believe has a bad transfer case. As I was driving on the highway the truck bucked a few times somewhat like its does if the fuel tank is switched. I stopped and got a grinding noise as I put it in park. I immediately turned the engine off. As I put it into park (as I shut it down), the truck continued to roll. I was a mile from home so I started the engine and It ran find, but again it made a grinding noise as I shifted, so I shut it down. I checked the transmission fluid and it looked and smelled fine. I tried starting again and it shifted fine and I got most of the way home. I got some more grinding noise and the engine seemed disconnected to the engine. I pulled over and let it sit for a few minutes and remembered that I had replaced the transfer case motor 8 months ago. So I started it up engaged 4 wheel drive and was able to drive home. I did have a few more noises on the way but I think the front wheel drive portion is OK and the rear wheel drive portion is pretty much shot. I’ve got it in my garage so I don’t want to move it and would like to know if anyone can help me trouble shoot this. Thanks! It sounds like you have a bad t-case. Jack up the rear wheels and put the shifter in 2HI. Put the tranny in park. If you can spin the rear driveshaft, you need a new case.

I jacked it up and I can't rotate the rear drive shaft in park. It rotates +/- 3/4 of an inch with a clanking sound as it stops. I also started the truck and shifted it in drive and reverse, and it rotated the wheels , but it didn't sound good. The U joints are fine, just replaced about 6 mo ago. My fear is replacing the transfer case only to find a problem in the rear axel or transmission. Any other suggestions to isolate it to the transfer case? Thanks!

The 1356 transfer case is lubed with a oil pump. The oil pump will self destruct around the 150,000 mile point. It sounds like what has happened. "Google" Borg Warner 1356 transfer case, to see the issue
