This is my first post, but I have found this site super informative so far. I just got my replacement FOBs programmed thanks to this site, and have a question about replacement keys: Can I go to Wal-Mart to get a spare key made for my 2004 Explorer, or is there a chip in the black housing that I don't know about? I have the base model, V6, no bells or whistles. I need a spare key (or two) and don't want to have to go to the dealer and get it rekeyed.
The 2004 uses a PATS security key, and it has a chip. The car must be programmed to the key(s) and you'll need to have at least 2 working keys to program new ones yourself. You can't buy the keys at Walmart, but you can get them on E-bay and get them cut locally. Only do this if you have 2 working keys so you can program them. It'll cost around $14 to $20 for a key on E-Bay, and around $80 or more at the dealership. I've bought several from a guy on E-Bay, who's a locksmith in Charlotte NC, and they've worked fine. Only problem is getting someone to cut them. So far, I've found someone at Walmart that would cut them.

Thank you! I only have one key (all that I got with it when I bought it). So, does that mean I can't do it myself? I'd hate to pay for the dealership to do it, but if that is my only option, so be it.
Yeah, you'll have to go to a dealership, unless you can find a locksmith with the correct scanner tool for programing the car. You can check around and see, you might find one. Otherwise, calll all the local dealerships. I've seen a broad range of prices on this board from various dealers.
