1987 Nissan Pulsar with apparently a swapped in 1.8Litre DOHC 4cyl engine (ca18de) and a 5spd. The valve covers are red. The wreckers and Nissan I've phoned - some say the 1.6L and the 1.8L look the same, some say they are different. How do I tell what Engine I have?
I got this car and it doesn't start, I bought it not running. I'm trying to get it to start and have elimanted a few things:
One of the four coils was bad, we replaced it and still no start
Replaced the power transistor/spark igniter and still no start
fixed the sloppy connection to the battery and still no start
checked the computer for codes, it says something in the ignition circuit is bad - but then we checked everything that we could and it still no start
the first time we checked the codes it tripped 13 and 21, 13 was some temp thing and 21 is the ignition circuit faulty, we reset the comp and it only flashed the 21 at us again
we have not checked compression
we have not checked fuel
when we pulled a sparkplug out it had fuel on it
when I bought the car the P.O. said it needed a new fuel rail/pressure regulator assembly. My friend says because the computer did not set a code for fuel that the fuel is fine.
We checked the fusible links, they are good,
the coils are getting power,
checked the for signal from igniter....I think. I'm not sure...
we even checked the wiring between the comp and the spark igniter
The 1.6 and the 1.8 look different. I owned a 1987 with the 1.6, it oly has a single overhead cam. The 1.8 has dual overhead cams, and the valve cover looks much different. Mine died and I left it for someone else to haul away. It had broken its timing belt/chain, and if the 3rd and reverse had worked, and the water pump not gone, and the CV joint, I may have kept it.
If an engine will not start it is either fuel or spark. If it is getting fuel, then it must be a spark problem. check coil, ignition switch etc.
