I am getting codes 18,63,88 or at least it seems that way to me. Question one is the code reading itself. Do the codes cycle twice? In other words are they repeated before they stop? The actual read out is 1-1-1-1-1-8-6-3-8-8-1-8-6-3-8-8 I see this as 18,63, 88 unless the 1's mean something at the start. If they are actually 18,63,88 then the code book says 18 is a erratic idm output to processor/spout circuit grounded, 63 is tp cicuit below minimum voltage, 88 is loss of dual plug imput controll. The Ranger is a 1990 with a 2.3 ltr. I just replaced the computer eariler today because it would not get fuel and I found a bad terminal on it. It started right up but it still runs like crap with a very lot of missing and chugging. If I see the codes correctly what really needs to be done to repair the problems?
Those look like KOEO and continuous codes, you should also run the KOER test since those codes should be serviced first. After you have the codes you would run the pinpoint tests to determine the exact cause. I have the 1988 Ford manual with the pinpoint tests.
You're correct. The code 11 means that the system passes the KOEO test (it repeats once, thus 11-11) and the other codes are the stored codes (also repeated).
18 not running means IDM Circuit Fail/SPOUT circuit grounded
63 is Throttle Positioner circuit below minimum voltage
First, I'd check all the ECM connections and make sure they're all tight and no intermittents. Next, I'd check the base timing. Sounds like the SPOUT ckt is giving you timing problems combined with a bad Throttle Position Sensor.
