I'm looking to build a big mudder, and i want to put a ford diesel in it, i'm just not sure what to put in. I know the powerstrokes are good engines, but i'm a little worried about all that wiring and all that mud/water! Any ideas on the best diesel to put in this thing? I would also like to modify whatever motor with twin turbo setup, ect. as it's going to have 53" michelins and 2 1/2 ton rockwells. I kinda want the extra power to turn that amount of rubber. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I think you should get a 6.9L Diesel or a 7.3L diesel shave the pistons down to the compression ratio of the powerstroke around 18:1 and put twim turbo's on it. You will need a custom Injector Pump and Injectors , head studs, basically the works but you will be able to run over 30lbs of boost. Starting it wit that low of a compression can be tough in cold weather though. If you go to www.dps-performance.com and get their phone number and call them you could get an estimate on how much it might be. i am guessing it is going to be alot though. Just an idea....
I would say for muddin go with a gasser, sorry guys but for your money i think a big ol' 460 would be the answer, rebuild it, you can easily get 600 ponies out of her for much less than two turbos and the rebuild of a diesel, don't get me wrong i love my 7.3 and i'm buying a 6.9 here soon too but for mudding i would stick with the gasser just my .02
The question really is do you need/want Horsepower or Torque to do mudding?.
If it is pure hp go for the gasser and let her rev up combined with a low gear setup.
If it is torque then go for a turbocharged and aftercooled diesel with a high gear.
Unfortunately the stock IDI engines don't have much of either when compared to the Powerstrokes although there are things you can do to make them more powerful and add torque. (turn up fuel, turbocharge, aftercool)
The diesels with the high low end torque are great for crawling thru the mud, but will run out of hp compared to a gasser if you are trying to get thru the mud with speed.
The other thing not to forget is the diesels are significantly heavier so there is a greater chance of getting stuck due to the extra weight of the truck.
Don't forget your entire drive line on the diesel will be heavier to handle the higher torque which makes the entire truck heavier than what you can get away with on a gasser that revs higher rpm's.
I agree as nice as the diesel would be with all the torque the gas engine would be alot cheaper to build and you could get more horsepower and just as much torque but at a different rpm.
thanks for all the input guys, i appreciate it. Your probably right, a big block would suit me better. But man, i love the sound of a turbo diesel and stacks! I'll get it all figured out, it's gonna be a year or so until shes ready, so i've got time. Thanks again!
Um-my motor is only stock, and I'm running 38 inch tires. Check out my truck in my gallery. I don't get stuck. I love to play in the mud. I have had water over the front corner of my hood pulling out 2 trucks at once because their distibutors kept getting wet. My brother watched it happen-my wife freaked cause the water was a foot deep in the cab. Oh, the days before children..............
