Hey guys.. I'm having a problem i hope you can help me out with.. The truck is a 98 f-150.Some time ago my truck started to pull to the right only when i appplied the brakes, it wasnt bad so i pushed it off. Well recently it got real bad and my front left side started dragging and gettin real hot, but still pulled to the right, real hard now. I figured since the left side was heating up real bad but was pulling hard right I assumed the right was grabbing and doing the stopping while the left just kinda drags all the time. So i figured it was a bad caliper. So i went ahead and put new calipers and pads on.. But i'm still having the problem and its gettin worse. Now i assume the left is sticking more because if i brake hard when i pull away it shudders a little kinda like a warped rotor does.. But the stopping is smooth it just pulls.. no shudder.. So i think the rotors are fine the left is just sticking.. Anyhow now i'm stumped.. Would this happen if the master cylinder is going bad.. Or maybe an ABS problem? Any thoughts would be appreciated
Everything should be proportioned by axle, not r/l. If it pulls right and the front is the problem, the left caliper is sticking/not moving. The left side is out running the right, resulting in steering movement. I start by exploring the condition of the rubber lines going to each caliper, if the LF line is swelling when you hit the brakes, the LF caliper will not recieve equal pressure. I would also pull the calipers and see if they are floating on the bracket smoothly or if they are getting hung up.
I have basically the same issue with my 2000 Excursion.
Pulling left. Changed right caliper and hose and both rotors. Left side pulled caliper cleaned pins to insure not sticking. Still pulling left. Pads have 3/4 of lining left and no damage.
My next step is to change the left caliper, hose, and all new pads. This will be everything on the front end.
If this doesn't solve it don't know where to look next.
Mine will pull left at brake application requiring a steering correction then harder brake application will straighten it out and you have to take out the steering correction. Done rapidly this means dual input on the wheel to compensate for the pull then loss of pull while trying to stop. NOT a healthy situation. Jim
If that doesn't cure it, get ready to do ball joints. Application of the brakes could be changing your caster on one side.
Didn't think about that,, don't understand why it would pull with first application then straighten out after more application. But then I learn something everyday,, (at least I hope I do) Jim
mine doesnt fix itself.. just pulls HARD.. yesturday i had to drive on the highwa y for about 10 miles.. got off and my left front was smokin..literally.. and everything is new on the front.. i dont get it.. ill check my ball joints but for as hard as it pulls, to me it seems it would have to be super far gone and i would think to recognize that problem.. but who knows..
When you jack it up does it spin freely or do you have restriction. Also if there is a restriction can you take the caliper off and does the restriction go away. It is possible you have a bad bearing if you have changed caliper/pads/hoses. Jim
