Picked up truck on Friday, got back to my town, stopped at autoparts store, went in, would not start. borrowed their code reader, would not read, all it said was MIL not illuminated. After about 30 minutes, she fires up and runs good. Got it home, shut it off, would not restart. Same thing all day. Saturday went to International dealer got a new CPS changed it, no differenc. Saturday afternoon let it idle for 2 hours, no issues. Shut it, started very hard. shut it off again, would not start.
I have checked the HPOP res, less than a half inch down at any time. Dealer said he just changed the filter before I bought it.
today was the worst. Got up, checked the HPOP res, less than about 3/4 down -- good. Tried to start - no start. Cranked several times, finally it slowly came to life. I would let it idle, but when I hit the fuel pedal she would cut off like a I turned the key off. Did this dance several times, finally she stayed running.
I told the wife to follow me, I was taking it back to the dealer. Half way back to the dealer (8 miles) the SES light comes on. The truck would not go over 25 on a flat stretch and barely make it up a hill-10mph. I thinking what the F___. She died as I was pulling into the dealers lot. But then restarted after two times trying.
If the SES light came on, then there will be a code stored. Maybe that will get you started in the right direction. Did you get it from a Ford dealership or used car lot?
Dang Tmiller. I sure hate that you are having these issues just buying the truck. I have had mine for over 5 years and never had this kinda shiite. Believe me, once you find it it will be good. I hope it's just not too painful. Has the dealer pulled any codes? There have been a few PITA trucks on this forum but for the most part they are real solid engines.
Used car lot from a guy the deals only in PSD and Cummins. Buys them at auction, goes over them and warranties them for 5yr/100,000 on the engine - not the components, Tcase and tranny. Hopefully he will make it right and fix her up this week. I can't wait to drive her.
I was thinking along the same lines, and even a possible obstruction in the tank. Tmiller, you can check operation of the fuel pump many ways. The easiest is by attaching a hose to the drain tube from the filter bowl, turn the key to energize the pump, then open the filter drain valve and observe for pressure, not just gravity draining fuel. The pump will run for about 30-45 seconds when the key is turned to the WTS position. Of course a gauge is the best way to test fuel pressure while underway, but that is a bit more complicated.
I tried that and the fuel pump was working without a load but unable to keep up with the fuel consumption....fuel guage setup is a better idea...I bet the dealer will make it right with the buyer...what is that a 48 hour rule or something to return?
Dealer called tonight. he said the truck would not act up for him, go figure. he took the fuel filter off and filled a glass jar with fuel. He said there was water in the fuel. he put some additives in it and he says it runs fine. Now would water in the fuel cause all the problems that I have had?
Picked up the truck tonight. Ran great. Stopped and started it several times. Put about 50 miles on it tonight. Just went out to start it again, took two times to start. Pull onto the street, the SES light came on, no power. I could floor the pedal and only get about 1500rpm. WTF!!!!!! Would this be a symptom of water still working its way through the fuel? Should I take off the valve covers and check the harness. How difficult is that? and what all has to come off. IPR sensor, how much for one of those and is it difficult to change. I going to see if someone in town can read the codes for me.
I would think water could still be causing you problems. You can drain the fuel bowl and check it yourself. Find the drain tube under the engine and extend it into a jar, open the yellow drain valve on the back of fuel filter housing and look at what drains out. If you see any water, then that may be your problem. I would think that water would trip the Water In Fuel light on the dash. The IPR is mounted on the back of the HPOP. It is a little trouble to change and sorta expensive, somewhere around $200.00. One thing you can check, there is a little cheap gold colored nut on the end of the IPR that hold the solenoid in place. If that nut gets loose, it will cause the engine to do all kinds of wierd stuff. To see the IPR, get above the engine, remove the plastic cover that covers the fuel filter, it is usually black and has 7.3 powerstroke wrote on it. Once it it off, you will see a gold rectangle box, that is you High Pressure Oil Pump (HPOP). Look down behind it on the drivers side near the bottom. You will see a gold colored round thing with wires coming off one side. This is you IPR (Injection Pressure Regulator). On the very end is the thin, cheap gold colored tin nut. Don't remember the size, but if it is loose, it needs to be tightened. Never found anything about how tight, just snug it up. Don't strip it out, remember that it is a CHEAP TIN nut and can be stripped easy.
