Today I started the 7.3 up and drove it 2 minutes at idle only to the back of the lot to do a brake job on the front. What I saw was diesel fuel dripping off the two stainless lines under the starter on the pass. side. I was wondering if this came from the filter/water sep. After the brake job I drained the filter and drove it around the block testing the brakes. Didn't see anymore fuel.
Just wondering if this is a normal ? start up purge or something similar.?
Thanks 2000 7.3 4WD. Jim
A fuel leak is not normal, did you see this before or after you drained the filter?
There were drops after the truck was started and before I drained the filter. After I moved the truck and saw the drops then I drained the filter to make sure the valve was full closed. The filter has been about 6000 miles and has not leaked before now.
I drove the truck and it appears dry,, but this doesn't mean it isn't leaking it might have just dried off from engine heat. I did see some wet? under the filter before I drained the filter. Don't remember seeing that before on the engine. This engine is normally dry. Jim
It's possible that the o rings in the drain valve are starting to leak this is starting to become a common problem . I would clean the engine real good then start looking for your leak . If it is the o rings in the drain valve they can be replaced.
Thanks for the info.. Saved it to favorites. Hopefully won't need to use it,, but like a parachute.. There if needed. Thanks again for all the help. Jim
Looked today and saw the drain valve on the rear of the filter wet. Does look like it is leaking. When o rings arrive I will pull and change them out to confirm. Thanks for the help Jim
Two things to keep in mind. Don't over tighten the torx screws. Never found any specs, so I tightened some and if it leaked, I tightened a little more. Second, put a little grease on the o rings before you reinstall. Good luck.
Fuel leak fixed. Thanks to everyone who inputed. I bought the o-rings from ebay as in the link, followed the instructions both in the package w/the o-rings and online.
I really like the tip to put white cloth below the filter. Bumble fingers did manage to drop the socket.
I was a little confused looking at the removed part and o rings, but it was very simple. The old seals popped out easily and the new rings stayed in and didn't fall out.
A few tips to others.
The yellow lever would fall off, so I used a very small tie wrap to hold it on until I had 1 screw started. I also used a small dap of grease to hold 1 screw in (the easiest to reach). This allowed me to use 1 hand to insert the top of the lever in the retaining hole and start the screw with the other. IF you haven't done this space for 2 hands is really tight and 3 hands won't fit. I did remove the 8mm bolt holding the controls above the lever that kept getting in my way.
So not only did dropsie retrieve the socket after dropping I even remembered to remove the white cloth after the leak check.
So far so good no leaks other than the wetness from prior to the repair.
