Fluctuating Idle

I have an '80 Bronco with a carburated 351W. I have problesm with a flctuating idle speed. sometimes it will idle at 650 rpm while at running temp and in drive, but at times, it will idle at 1000rpm. I wonder if te cooler weather seems to have effected it. I have tinkered with the idle before, but the problem was that it woudl drop so low that I woudl have to set it up. is is possible that the screw is movign due to normal engine vibration?

Is this a sign I need a carburtor rebuild/ The engine has 86,000 actual miles.

Fluctuating Idle

You may want to check the fast idle cam on your carb. Sometime when it wants to idle at 1000 rpm shut it off and look to see if the linkage is touching the regular idle screw. If it's not there is a good chance your fast idle cam, which is hooked to your choke plate, is hanging up. If this is the problem it wouldn't need rebuilt. Just spray some good carb cleaner all around the choke linkage, and make sure the fast idle cam turns freely and moves with the choke plate.
